0. L. GORBIN. SASH FASTENER. I No. 606,448.* Patented June 28, 1898. 9 y' 4 1 Jr :l j H M- I If II OSKY ILUcY CORBIN, or COLUMBUS, orno;
'SASH-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 606,448, dated June 28, 1898. Application'filed November 10,1896, Serial No. 611,664. (No and) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSKY Lucr CORBIN, a' citizen of the United States, residing at C0- lumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Fastenings, of I which the following is a clear and exact de scription, such as willenable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain new. and useful improvements in window sash fasteners; and it has for its object to provide a fastener that will at one operation rigidly secure both sashes in any desired position With respect to each other and to the window-frame and in such a way that they cannot be easily interfered with by interlopers from the outside; and it consists of certain details of con struction as set forth in the claim. In order to attain this object, I have devised the construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is an inside perspective view of one complete window of sash and windowframe fitted with my improved fastener, the lower sash being shown in a partly-raised position. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same, better showing the relation of the parts, the lower sash in this view being shown in its lowered position. Fig. 3 is a top View of the retaining-bolt. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the notched anchor-plate designed to be let into the side of the windowframe; and Fig. 5 is a like view of the cotipating angle-plate designed to be let into the Window-sash, the latter being shown in dotted lines.
Wherever the same letters of reference are used in more than one view they apply to the same part.
Referring now to the drawings, A repre sents the frame of a window, and B and L the lower and upper sashes, respectively.
Dis an anchor-plate of metal or the like having its central longitudinal portion struck up and then partially cut away at intervals, as at I, to form notches or serrations, as shown. This anchor-plate is let into the inside of the window frame, beginning about half-way up and extending a suitable distance toward the top, its position being such that the struck-up portion will correspond with and form a continuation of the parting-bead between the two sashes.
T is an angle-plate let into the stile of the upper sash, Fig. 5, adjacent to the anchorplate D. It is provided with notches, as C, after the same manner as the anchor-plate D.
h is a plate fixed to the top of the meetingrail of the lower sash adjacent to the angleplate T and anchor-plate D. This plate is provided with guides g g, in which plays the retaining-bolt M, kept in its forward position by the coiled spring f. This bolt is given an oblique direction-that is, it is inclined backward at an angle of, say, forty-five degreesso as to make it capable of engaging with the notches of the anchor-plate and angle-plate at the same time. It is this feature of myinvention that I place most confidence in, as it provides a very simple .and effective means to the end desired. 7 y
The various parts of my device being con structed and arranged as described, the operation of the same is as follows, as will be readily understood:
When'it is desired to raise the lower sash, the retaining-bolt M is withdrawn out of engagement with the notches of the anchor-plate and angle-plate, and the sash is lifted to the desired position. The retaining-bolt is then released, whereupon, by its backward inclination, it enters registering notches in the anchor-plate D and angle-plate T, so as to hold the two sashes rigidv both with respect to each other and to the Window-frame. Thus the window can be adjusted with either the lower or upper sash opened alone or both opened together or both closed, as desired, and in whicheverposition theyare placed they will be firmly locked by the retaining-bolt M. Havingthus described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,'is--- A window-sash fastener consisting of an anchor-plate let into the window-frame and having a struck-up notched longitudinal rib oor responding to and forming a continuation of the parting-bead; an angle-plate let into the adjacent corner of the upper-sash stile and havingcorresponding notches; and a springseated sliding bolt on the top of the meetingrail of the lower sash, mounted obliquely 7 thereof, so as to be adapted to enter a notch CHARLES AUBERT, DELLA JANE FINLEY.
