EDITH FOSTER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
WINDOW-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters Patent No. 747,403, dated December 22, 1903.
Application led September 19, 1903. Serial No. 173,788'. (No model.) l
To all whom it may concern,.-
Beit known that I, EDITH FOSTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relatesmcre particularly to `means for locking the window-sashes in position both relatively to each other and to the Its objects are to provide a device of simple character which will eiciently lock both of the window-slashes in any desired position relatively to each other and will simultaneously lockeaoh-sash in position relative to. the window-frame.
It consists in the novel features and details' of construction which will be pointed out more specifically hereinafter and as shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is an elevation showing the inner portion of a'window provided with a sash-lock embodying thisinvention, sashes being shown in partially-open position. Fig. 2 is a view showing the sashes and the lock in side elevation. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail of a lock-l ing-bolt. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail showing a portion of the locking-strip with the head of the-locking-boltin engagement therewith.
As shown in the drawings, A represents a window-frame which is provided with sashes B and C. A bracket D is rigidly secured to the top rail b of the upper sash B. Pivoted to this bracket is a depending locking-stip E, which is provided with a series of indentations e onthe edge toward the window, which are adapted to engage with the top rail o of the lower sash C. It will be noted that when this strip is swung down so that the indentations engage with the top rail c the two sashes will be locked in position relatively to each However, it is desirable to further hold the strip E in position and also to lock the sashes in position relatively to the frame A. I provide a locking-bolt F for this purpose, which is held in asuitable socket g in a bracket G, which is secured to the frame, as shown in Fig. l. This bolt is provided with an oval-shaped head f, which is adapted to pass through the oval holes e in the strip E and when lthe bolt F is turned by means of the knob f' to securely hold and lock the strip E -change the position of either one or both of the sashes, the bolt F is thrown out of engagement with the strip E. The latter is then swung out at the bottom so that either sash may be freely moved. When the sashes have been broughtto the desired position, the lower end of the strip E is pressed toward the window and an indentation brought intoengagement with the rail c of the lower sash. This brings a hole e' opposite the end of the bolt F. The bolt is then shot into .position and the knob f turned down so that the head f locks the strip E in position. l
- It will be noted that changes in the details lof construction will readily suggest themselves as coming within the scope of this invention, and I do not wish to limit myself to the exact forms herein shown and decribed; but
What- I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a window-lock, the combination with a window-sash, of a bracket secured to said sash, a locking-strip pivoted to said bracket and having indentations adapted to engage with the rail of a corresponding sash, and a locking-bolt secured to the frame and adapted to engage with said strip and to lock said strip in positive engagement with the rail and in positive position relative to the frame.
2. In a window-lock, the combination with an upper sash, of a bracket secured to the top rail thereof, a locking-strip pivoted to said bracket and provided with indentations adapted to engage with the top rail of the lower sash, a bracket secured to the windowframe,'and a bolt in said bracket provided with an oval head adapted to engage with oval holes in said locking-strip, whereby the latter may be locked in any desired position.
EDITH FOSTER.
