Description

FFTQ.
JOSEPH Z. KRIER, OF PHILO, OHIO.
WINDOW-SASH FASTENER.
a To all whom it may concern:
Fasteners, of which the following is a speciheat-ion.
My invention relates to the improvement of window sash fasteners and the objects of my invention are to provide a simple, inexpensive and reliable fastening for window sashes of improved construction and arrangement of parts; to so construct my improved sash fastener as to prevent its being unlocked or otherwise manipulated from the outer side of the window or frame between the sash frame members and to produce other improvements the details of which will be more fully pointed out hereinafter. These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a view partially in perspective and partially in section of portions of the upper and lower sash frame showing my improved lock or fastening device thereon in a locked position, Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the upper frame member of a lower sash and the lower frame member of an upper sash, said view being taken through the center of said fastening device.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In carrying out my invention, I employ an elongated comparatively narrow hinge plate 1 having a divided tubular enlargement or barrel l on one of the longer edges thereof. This plate, as indicated in the drawing, is adapted to be secured by screws or otherwise to the upper side of the inner ledge of the lower transverse frame member 2 of the upper window sash.
3 represents a locking tongue, one end of which is formed with a transverse barrel 5 which is adapted to fit loosely within the dividing space between the sections of the hinge barrel 1 said tongue barrel being hinged therein by a hinge rod 4 in the usual manner of connecting two hinged members. To the vertical face of the upper transverse frame member 5 of a lower window sash, I secure an oblong plate 6, the latter being formed in its upper portion with a forwardly projecting tubular hinge member 6: The ends of this tubular member 6 are e1n- Specification of Letters Patent.

braced by the parallel vertical arms 7' of a yoke 7. To the outer face of this yoke adj acent to its upper side, is pivoted the upper end of a swinging latch piece 8 and in the upper side of the tongue 3 adjacent to its outer end is formed a transverse recess 3*, one end of which is open at the side of the tongue body.
It will be understood that when it is not desired to lock the sash frame members 5 and 2 together, the tongue 3 may be thrown upward out of the vertical path of the sash member 5 and the yoke body 7 may be permitted to drop downward against the face of the plate 6. However, when the upper and lower sash frames are in their closed positions and the sash frame members 2 and 5 have their upper sides flush one with the other, said sash frame members may be locked rigidly in engagement with each other by raising the yoke 7 upward, swinging the tongue 3 outward and causing it to enter the underside recess of the yoke body with the recessed end of the tongue projecting beyond said yoke body and said tongue body lying upon the upper side of the sash member 5, as shown in Fig. l of the drawing. When the parts are in this position, it is obvious that the latch 8 may be swung downward to engage the recess 3 of the tongue, thus locking the tongue securely in connection with the yoke and at the same time locking the lower sash against upward movement or the upper sash of the window against downward movement.
From the construction and operation described, it will be seen that the construction of. my sash locking device is simple and that when the same is in its locked position, the position of the looking parts is such as to overcome any effort to release said parts from the outer side of the window.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that simple and efficient means are herein provided for accomplishing the objects of the invention, but while the elements shown and described are well adapted to serve the purposes for which they are intended, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth, but includes within its purview such changes as may be made within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim, is:
1. In a sash fastener, the combination with an upper sash frame and a hinge plate secured thereto, of a lower sash frame, a yoke member pivotally connected to said lower sash frame, a tongue having one end hinged to said hinge plate and its remaining end adapted to be embraced by the arms of said yoke, and means for latching one end of said tongue into engagement with said yoke.
2. In a sash fastener, the combination with an upper sash frame and a hinge plate secured thereto, of a lower sash frame, a plate secured thereto, a swinging yoke body pivotally connected with said plate, a locking tongue having one end hinged to said 5 hinge plate and having its remaining end provided with an upper side recess, and a pivoted latch member carried by said yoke adapted to swing into engagement with the recessed end portion of the tongue when the 20, latter is projected between the arms of said yoke.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
