I UNITED. STATES PATENT OEEICE.
HERMANN J. MOHLENHOFF, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO GEORGE K. WALLACE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
VSHUTTER FASTENER AND SETTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 721,318, dated February 24, 1903.
Application iiled AugustZl, 1901. Serial No. 72.815. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known' that I, HERMANN J MOHLEN- HOFF,a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York,-have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shutter or Blind Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
In carrying out my invention I provide the shutter or blind With a locking-bolt suitably mounted in a rotatable shank, and I pivot a bar to the shutter or blind framing at a point so located as to be immediately beneath the said shutter or blind when it is closed, said bar engaging the said rotatable shank and adapted to be engaged by the said lockingbolt.
The main object of my invention is to protect and conceal the fastener as much as possible, especially when the shutter or blind is closed.
My invention consists incertain/novelde-- tails of construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and other objects of my invention will appear hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a shutter or blind and its framing with a fastener embodying my invention fitted thereto. Fig. 2 is a View, partially in central transverse section and partially in elevation, of the fastener, showing same on a somewhat larger scale. Fig. 3 is a faceview of the pivoted arm employed, together with a view in cross-section of the rotatable shank with which the said arm engages.
Reference character l designates a shutter or blind, and 2 a framing therefor. The framing 2 is provided with a bar 3, pivoted thereto at 4, the said bar having a plurality of perforations therethrough. The point of such pivotal connection 4 is so located as to beimmediately beneath 'the said shutter or blind when same is closed. The said framing further has a recess or abutment 5, adapted at certain times to receive a locking-bolt, as will presently be explained.
The shutter or blind is recessed inwardly from its lower edge, and a cylindrical shank '6 is rotatably fitted therein. A socket orV washer 7 may be provided, if desired. The shank 6 has a ange or shouldered portion 8, and a retaining-plate 9, having anorifice into and through which that portion of the shank 6 which is below the ,said flange 8 extends, is secured to the said shutter or blind and by its engagement with the said flange or shouldered portion retains the said shank in place while permitting it to be rotated. The said shank 6 vhas a cylindrical bore extending longitudinally therethrough, and a locking-bolt lO is tted to said cylindrical bore. The said shank has also another perforation therethrough, said perforation being at a point below the flange 8 and substantially at right angles to 'the said cylindrical bore. The free end of the said bar 3 is fitted to the said perforation and is adapted to slide freely therethrough.
The locking-holt l0 has a portion ll extending at right angles therefrom at a point above the upper portion of the said shank 6, to which it is tted, said portion being arranged to penetrate the face of the shutter or blind, as shown, and the said shutter or blind having a slot l2, whereby a limited movement of the said bolt is permitted. The lower end of the said bolt is permitted to pass entirely through the bar 3 (when opposite a perforation therein) and to extend vbeyond the lower end of the shank 6s This is for the purpose that when the shutter or blind is entirely closed the said bolt may enter the recess 5 in the framing 2 and lock the said shutter or blind in its closed position. When it is desired to open the shutter or blind, it is merely necessary to slightly raise the bolt 10, when the said shutter or blind may readily be pushed open. The shutter or Vblind may be held open at about the point required by permitting the locking-bolt l0 to enter the proper perforation in the bar 3.
-I wish it to be understood that I do not desire to limit myself only to the precise details of construction as herein set forth, and it is of course obvious that my device may equally be applied to hinged windows, doors, &c.
What I claim is- In a shutter or blind fastener the combination with an arm adapted to be pivoted to IOO ro said shank may also engage the said shutter or blind framing when the said shutter or blind is closed, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I, HERMANN J. MoHL- ENHOFF, have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing 15 Witnesses, this 15th day of August, 1901.
