WINDOW-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELMER D. AUGUR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to that class of window locks which permit of the winy leased.
With this in mind my invention resides in the features of construction, arrangement and operat-ion to be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section through the lower and upper portions of the upper and lower sashes respectively of a window, to which my improved lock is applied. Fig. 2 is a cross-section through the upper sash, showing the lock in plan. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section, on an enlarged kscale, through the lower portion of the locking post. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the stationary lower portion of the locking post, with the movable portion removed. Fig. 5 is a crosssection, on an enlarged scale, taken through the lower sash plate, and vtaken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the lower sash plate, removed, and illustrating a slightly modified form, and Fig. 7 is a similar view showing another slightly modified form.
On the lower rail a of the upper sash A is secured a vertical post which upstands on the inside of the glass B, said post embodying a lower` stationary portion 1, formed integral with the angular plate 2, adapted to be secured to the sash, as particularly shown in Fig. 8. The stationary post portion 1 has a vertical opening 3 in which the lower pin 4 of the upper` rotatable portion 5 is eX- tended, said pin being locked from removal by means of a nut 6. The stationary post portion 1 also has notches 7 in its upper surface at three sides, into which the pivoted locking piece 8 of the movable post portion 5 may engage; this locking piece 8 being tensioned in both directions by a spring 9. The part 1 is square in cross-section, and the outer end of the removable post portion 5 has a head or extensions 10 which project in opposite directions.
Secured on the upper rail of the lower sash C is a plate 11 having a central stud 12 secured therethrough and projecting upwardly therefrom through the longitudinal slot 13 of a locking member 14, this locking member 14 being provided at one end with a transverse enlargement 15 having an oblong slot 16 which its over the post before described, and as particularly shown in Fig. 2. At its opposite end the member 14 may have a screw 17 threaded therethrough, the inner end of which is to bear inwardly against the stud 12, and the outer end of which is provided with a thumb piece 18. In another form as shown in Fig. 6, the member 14 may have a spring 19 coiled and compressed between its stud 12 and one end thereof, while in still another form thereof as shown in Fig. 7, a cam piece 20 may be revolubly mounted upon the stud 12 to engage an upstanding lip 21 formed on one end of member 14. When the upper portion of the post is locked by the engagement of the part 8 with one of the notches 7, it cannot be turned. In this position thewindow may be opened until the member 15 strikes the head 10 of the post. To raise the window all the way up, the lower sash must first be closed,`in which position the member 14 will have its enlarged end 15 around the stationary portion 1 of the post. Then the locking piece 8 may be pulled outwardly with the hand, until the movable portion 5 of the post is released and by giving the same a quarter turn, in either direction the locking piece 8 and the head 10 will be in position so that the elongated slot member 14 will pass over the same. When it is desired not to use the device the member 14, after entire disengagement from the post, may be swung to a position parallel with the sash C. The screw 17 and the cam piece 20 may each be employed to hold the sashes together and prevent rattling, and the spring 19 will perform a like function, while all three forms permit of adjustment of member 14 to sashes of different thicknesses.
It is to be understod that the lock hereinbefore described may be applied with equal facility and effectiveness, and in similar manner as before described in connection with windows, to doors.
I claim:
l. A sash lock comprising a post carried by one of the sashes and having transverse slots in its upper end, a headed stud rotatably mounted on the post, a catch carried by the stud and engageable with the aforesaid slots7 and a locking member carried by the other sash and having an opening to receive the stud, said opening being shaped to permit the head of the stud to pass therethrough when turned into alinement therewith.
2. A sash lock comprising a post carried by one of the sashes and having transverse slots in its upper end, a headed stud rotatably mounted on the post, a catch carried by the stud and engageable with the aforesaid slots, and a rotatable and longitudinally adjustable locking member carried by the other sash and having an opening to receive the stud, said opening being shaped to permit the head of the stud to pass therethrough when turned into alinement therewith.
