DOOR-LOCK AND ALARM DE VICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0n 732,067, dated June 30, 1903.
Application filed February 16, 1903. Serial No. 143,627. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM N. GREEK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greeley, in the county of Greeley and State of Ne braska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Locks and Alarm Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a lock device for doors, windows, and the like and aims to provide a simple attachment which may be carried about in the pocket and which may be readily and easily applied when desired.
Further, the invention provides an alarm means which is used in conjunction with the locking attachment and which is detachably fixed thereto, the parts being adapted for separation to facilitate their disposal when the device is removed andnot in use.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for eifecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and drawings hereto attached.
WVhile the essential and characteristic features of the invention are susceptible of modification, still the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view showing the embodiment of the invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view looking from the rear of the device, showing the parts disposed in working position. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the locking attachment alone, showing the parts separated. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the locking attachment, parts assembled so as to be adapted to be placed within the pocket.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The device consists of three essential parts-a stop 1, a lock-slide 2, and alarm means 3 for cooperation with the aforesaid The stop 1 comprises a stem 4 and a lug 5, extending laterally therefrom at one end. From the under side of the stop is projected a keeper or slot 6, in which the lockslide moves and which cooperates with other means to fix the adjustment of the lock-slide relative to the stop 1. An integral screw-pin 7 is disposed upon the under slide of the alarm means 3, which comprises a bell of ordinary character adapted to be set off bypressure upon a push-button 8, and said pin 7 screws into a screw-opening 9, disposed intermediate the ends of the stop 1. Anchoring means comprising spurs 10 extend from one end of the lock-slide 2, said spurs being adapted to enter the jamb 11 of the door-opening. The door when closed bears against the side of the lock-slide 2 opposite the spurs 10, and thus rigidly holds the lock-slide in position between the said jamb 11 and the door, which is designated 12.
As before promised, the lock-slide 2 is adjustable upon the stop 1, being guided in this adjustment by a longitudinal slot 13, extending from the end of the slide opposite the end carrying anchoring-spurs 10. Teeth 14, disposed upon opposite edges-of the lock-slide 2, are adapted to fix the same at any relative adjustment, whereby the attachment may be applied to doors or windows of different sizes. The aforesaid teeth 14 upon one edge of the lock-slide are disposed intermediate the teeth upon the other edge or opposite the spaces between the said teeth. This feature is advantageous in that a nicety of adjustment of the lock-slide to different-sized doors and windows is secured. The slot 13, as before mentioned, serves to guide the lock-slide in its movement upon the stop 1, a clampscrew 15 cooperating with the slot 13 to direct this movement. The teeth 14 interlock with the upper and lower sides 16 of the keeper 6, thereby locking the lock-slide at any desired adjustment upon the stop 1.
In the operation of the device, the parts being disposed in the positions most clearlyindicated in Fig. 1, any movement of the door to open same will depress the push-button 8 of the alarm means, and immediately the same will notify the occupants of the dwelling of such movement of the door. This movement, however, is limited by the lug 5 of the stop 1 in a manner which will be readily seen, so that though the alarm may be set off, yet at the same time the door is maintained practically locked.
It is contemplated when the device is not in use to remove the alarm or bell 3 from the stop 1 and to adjust the stop 1 and the lookslide 2 with reference to each other so as to occupy the smallest possible amount of space. This is desirable, since it is purposed to place the locking attachment within the pocket when not in use, and when the parts of the attachment are to be so disposed thelock-slide is removed from the keeper 6 and the same replaced, so that the spurs 10 will be disposed to lie against the lug-5. (See Fig. 4.) The clamp-screw is used in the same relation as heretofore described and prevents the accidental separation of the lug 5 and the stop 1. An opening 17 is located at the end of the stop opposite the lug 5, and the looking attachment may be placed upon a key-ring or the like when it is disposed within the pocket.
I am not to be restricted to the exact structure of parts as illustrated in the drawings; but such changes as are included within the broad spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims may be made.
Having thus described theinvention, what is claimed as new is- 1. In a device of the character described, in combination, a locking attachment comprising a stop, a loop projected from the said stop, a lock-slide for relative adjustment upon the stop, and positive interlocking means between the lock-slide and the loop for fixing the adjustment of the said slide upon the stop, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the character described, and in combination, a stop, a keeper or loop projected from the said stop, a lock-slide adapted for relative adjustment upon the stop and provided upon opposite edges with teeth, said teeth being adapted to interlock with the keeper to fix the adjustment of the lock-slide upon the stop, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the character set forth, and in combination with a stop, a keeper or loop projected from the under side of the said stop, a lock-slide adapted for relative adj ustment upon the said stop and provided upon opposite edges with teeth, said teeth being adapted to interlock with the loop upon the stop to fix the adjustment of the lock-slide thereon, and guide means adapted to cooperate with the keeper to direct the lock-slide in its movement upon the stop, and alarm means carried by thestop, substantially as described.
4:. In a locking device and alarm for doors and the like, in combination, a stop having a lug laterally projected from one end and a keeper or loop projected from the under side thereof, a lock-slide adapted for relative adjustment upon the aforesaid stop, teeth disposed upon opposite edges of the lock-slide and adapted to cooperate with the keeper or loop upon the stop and to fix the adjustment of the lock-slide upon the stop, spurs disposed upon one end of the lock-slide, a 1011- gitudinal slot extended from the opposite end of the said slide, and a-clamp-screw adapted to cooperate with the said slot to prevent displacement of the lock-slide from the stop, and alarm means secured to the stop and adapted to be set off by opening movement of the door, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM N. GREER.
