Sash-Fasteners. Nm-152,183. Patented June 16, 1874.

UNITED STATES VILLIAM T. SPENCER,
PATENT EEIoIiz.`
OE WATERLOO, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,183, dated June 16, 1874; application filed v May 28, 1874.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. SPENCER, of WVaterloo, in the county of Black Hawk, in the State of Iowa, have made certain Improvements in Sash Locks or Fastenings, of which the following is a specification:
The object of this invention is to produce a thoroughly reliable and cheap lock or fastening for sash or analogous uses; and it consists in a novel construction and arrangement ot' the parts that form the lock or fastening, as will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim.
- In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of lock in position; Fig. 2, a side view; and Figs. 3 and 4, details ot' parts.
A is the body of the lock or fastening, made from sheet metal of the proper thickness, cut out to shape, having the necessary openings therein for the bolt to slide in, and slots for guiding and locking the bolt, either open or closed, then struck up and formed into shape by dies. a is a slot or longitudinal opening -in the body A, to guide the lock-bolt in its TecprOCatiOns.
a. and a are slots or notches at each end of' slot a', and at right angles thereto. B is the sliding' bolt, to freely slide i'n openings in body A, and has a transverse slot, b, located centrally therein. C is a knob, projecting' from the face ot' the body A, and has a neck, c, that passes through slot a in body A, and through slot b in bolt B, Where it is securely fastened by screw-nut or washer c', but not so Iast to bolt B but that it can slidein slots 1),(1., a', and a. D is a flushplate, fast upon the window-jamb E', with a slot, el, therein to receive the bolt B. The lock or fastening A is lnade fast to the sashstile E by meansjof screws l in ears 2 of body A, or other convenient devices.
Any number of Hush-plates, D, may be used upon the jamb of thepwindow frame or casing that may be desired, for both purposes of locking the sash down or holding it in any desired position, or the lock can be attached to the top of a meeting-rail of the sash, and the sash securely locked in that way.
Vhen the lock is in properposition and the sash unlocked, the knob C will be forced intoslot a by sliding in the transverse slot b in bolt B, or if the bolt is locked open, then the neck o will be forced into slot a, and when in either slot, a or a, the bolt B cannot be reciprocatcd in either direction until the knob C is slid out of such slot into slot a, when it can be pushed forward or back.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is The sliding bolt B, passing entirely through the case, so as to serve for right or left hand, having slot b and carrying-knob C to operate therein, in combination with slots a a and a" in the body A, substantially as and for the purposes described.
WILLIAM T. SP ENGER.
