Description
E.VP.Y S'TIMENS & T. c. MARTQINV.
Hasp-Locks.
Patented March 18, 1873 TWKM,
Wi ine'sses,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIcEQ EDWARD P. STIMENS AND THOMAS o. MARTIN, OF'PERRYVILLE, ASSIGNORS OF ONE-HALF THEIR RIGHT TO ABRAHAM CLARK, OF OSNABURG, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN HASP-LOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,877, dated March 18, 1873.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDWARD P. STIMENs and THOMAS C. MARTIN, of Perryville, in the county of Ashland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Look and Latch Hasps; and that the following is a full, clear, and exact specification thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the said invention.
Our invention consists of a hasp mounted on a shaft extending through the door and back plate of the lock, and arranged to drop through a staple on the door-jamb to secure the door when closed, and to project into the lock-box and permit the reception of the lockbolt in order to lock the door, thus allowing the hasp to be operated from either side of the door, and uniting the lock and hasp in a compact and durable construction.
The accompanying drawing shows aperspective view of our hasp and look as applied to A a door, with a detached detail section through the hasp-shaft, hasp, door, and lock-plate.
\ A is the lock-box, made with an extended back plate, a, which is secured to the door I.
B is the hasp, which is secured on the shaft 12, which extends through the lock-plate a and door I, as shown in detail section, and which has a knob or handle at its end, by means of which the hasp can be operated on the side of the door opposite to that on which it is attached. The hasp B has the end catch 0, which drops through the staple E secured on the door-jamb K, and thus secures the door when closed. This catch 0 is of suflicient length to drop through an opening in the lock box A directly under the staple E, and has an opening, D, formed in it into which the lockbolt G can be shot by means of the key H, thus securely locking the door; A thumb-piece is formed on the hasp B, as shown, by which it is operated on the side of the door to which it is attached.
From this description it will be seen that the hasp serves as a simple and secure doorfastening, which can be operated from either side of the door, and at the same time it is so combined with the look as to admit of its being securely locked so as to prevent the open ing of the door except by one provided with the lock-key.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The hasp B with catch 0 mounted on shaft b, which passes through the lock-plate a and door I, said hasp being arranged to be operated from either side of the door, and to drop into the lock-box A and be secured by the lockbolt G, the several parts being constructed and combined substantially as specified.
As evidence of the foregoing witness our hands this 12th day of August, A. D. 1872. EDWARD P. STIMENS. THOMAS C. MARTIN. Witnesses: FRANK GEIsELMAN,
A. O. KILE.
