Description

W. H. TAYLOR.
LATCH Am LOCK 'comazman.
No.181,115. Patented Aug.15,1876.
INVENTOR firm/2o FTa yla): M Bil i/e's .dtturney N-PETZM PHOYO-LI'DUOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON, D (24 UNITED STATES PATENT QF'FICE.
WARREN H. TAYLOR, OF STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE YALE LOCK MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN LATOHES AND LOCKS COMBINED.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 181,115, dated August 15, 1876; application filed July 20. 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WARREN H. TAYLOR, of Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists in' the improved method of connecting a vibrating bolt or latch with the spindle to which is attached the knobs for operating the same from the outside of the door, as hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the case of an ordinary mortise-lock for for sliding doors, and B the bolt-work of the same, adapted to engage with a suitable strike or keeper let into the jamb. C is an ordinary hub or roller back, passing through which is a square aperture for the knob-spindle. E is a sliding bolt secured by the tumblers F, and adapted by means of the hook e, to engage with a corresponding hook on the bolt B, and
' prevent the operation of the latter by means of the knob when it is desired to secure the door. The tail-piece D is pivoted to the bolt B by a pin, 12, and has at its other end two raised faces, d d, on which the arms of the to cause the bolt to latch promptly, and without unnecessary friction against its strike or keeper. The tail-piece D being connected to the bolt B at about midway in its length, the tension of the spring G, although but little felt at the outer end of the bolt, is sufficient at this point to control the knobs through the connections D and C, and in this way I attain with one spring, the effect of what is known as an easy spring, which consists in so constructing a look as to give a light spring 'action on the latch or bolt, and a stiffer one on the knob-spindle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with the pivotal bolt B, provided with a spring, G, the tail-piece D, pivoted to the bolt at apointintermediate between its fulcrum and its locking end and the hub C.
2. In combination with the pivotal bolt B, pivotal tail-piece D, and hub C, the sliding bolt E, and tumblers F, for securing the bolt B in the locked position.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name.
WARREN H. TAYLOR.
