Description

.UNITED STATES PATENT GFFIGE.
WILLIAM GARDINER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN KNOB-LATCHES. v
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 173,853, dated February 22, 1876; application filed January 15, 1876.
, the line mm, Fig. 1 Fig. 3 is a detail section taken through the line 3 3 Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrow; Fig. 4 is a detail view of the key-hole escutcheon.
Similar letters of referenceindicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved lock, which shall be so constructed that the 'key may be inserted through the knob and spindle that operate the catch-bolt, and which shall be simple in construction, neat in appearance, reliable in use, and will avoid cutting key-holes in the doors.
The invention consists in the combination of the lugs, the ring-plates, and the end plate with the spindle, the lock-case, and the knob,
and in the combination of the lever notched to receive the lugs of the knob and of the spindle, and the pin with the knob, the knobspindle, and the lever and block that operate the catch'bolt, as hereinafter fully described. I
A represents the lock-case; B represents the lockbolt; and G the catch-bolt. D is the lever by which the catchbolt G is operated.
E is the block by which the lever D is usually operated, and which in ordinary locks is attached to and operated by the knob-spindle, but which in this case works upon a pivot attached to the case A, and is made with a F is the knob, which may be made of wood, metal, or other suitable material, and which works upon the spindle G, upon which it is secured by a plate, H, placed in the concaved head of the knob F, and secured by screws to the end of the spindle G.
- To the face of the plate H is hinged a cap plate, h, to cover the keyhole 9 which passes through the plate H, and longitudinally through the spindle G. The inner end of the knob-spindle G has lugs g formed upon its opposite sides to receive the screws or bolts I, by which it is secured to the lock-case A. The inner ends of both spindles G may be secured by the same bolts I, if desired.
. The spindles G are stiffened and strengthened by the ring-plates J, which surround the spindles G and the shank of the knob F, rest against the opposite sides of the door and have projections upon their inner sides to rest upon the lugs 9 and have holes formed through them to receive the screws or bolts 1, so that the knob-spindles may be bolted to the lock-case and at the same time clamped to the door.
K are lugs formed upon the end of the shank of the knob F, or upon a ring attached to said end, according to the material of which said knob is made.
The. lugs K enter notches c in the outer side of the lever L, which hangs and Works upon the spindle G, so that the said lever can be worked by turning the knob F. In the inner side of the lever L are formed wide notches B to receive the necks of the lugs 9 so that the knob F and leverL can be worked upon the spindle G.
The lower ends of the two levers L are attached to the opposite ends of a pin, M, that passes through a curved slot in the lockcase A, and between the lever D and the toe e of the block E, so that when the knob F is turned to move the pin M in one direction it pushes against the lever D and draws back the catch-bolt G, and when turned in the other direction the pin M pushes against the toe e of the block E, and the said block operates upon the'lever D to draw back the catch-bolt 0, so that the said catch-bolt may be drawn back by turning either knob F in either direction.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patenty 1. The combination of the lugs 9 the ring-plates J, and the blate H, with the and the lever and block D that operate spindle G, t-he lock-case A and the knob the catch-bolt O, substantially as herein F, substantially as herein shown and. deshown and described.
scribed. WILLIAM W. G-ARDINER.
2. The combination of the lever L, notched Witnesses:
to receive the lugs K and g and the pin JAMES T. GRAHAM,
M, with the knob F, the knob-spindle G, T. B. MosHER.
