LATCH AND LOCK COMBINED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 400,111, dated March 26, 1889.
Application led June 29, 1888. Serial No. 278,553. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS OVERTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Corpus Christi, in the county of Nueces and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Latch and Lock; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in that class of combined locks and latches in which the key is inserted through a key-hole formed in the knob of the latch; and it consists in certain novelty in the construction and arrangement of the various parts, all of which I will now proceed to point out and describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of my improved lock, showing the same attached to the inside of a door. Fig. 2 is a plan view of t-he same with the lid of the casing removed. Fig. 3 is a section taken through the longitudinal center of the knobs and spindle, and Fig. 4 is a detail.
Referring to said drawings, A is the door. a is a round hole therein; B, a cylindrical bushing in said hole having on its outer end a rosette, b, provided with a projection, b', which enters the door and prevents said bushing from turning. The inner end of the bushing projects through on the inside of the door and is provided on its outer surface with a screw-thread, b2.
C is the lock-case, having in its lower plate approximate to the door a circular aperture, c, provided with an inner annular flange, c, on the inside of which is formed a screw-thread, c2. To secure the case to the door, the scre\ fthreaded end of the bushing is inserted in the aperture c and the case screwed on untilthe end of the bushing is about flush with the in` ner surface of the flange c', suitable washers being insert-ed between the rosette and door to accommodate the bushing to doors of dit ferent thicknesses. The sides of the case are formed so as to converge toward the end of the case approximate to the edge of the door, and an opening, C', is formed between said converging en ds, through which the bolt projects.
D is the outer plate of the case, conforming to the shape of said case, its small end having downwardlyprojecting side pieces, d, which are bent out and are provided with holes, through which screws are inserted to secure the plate to the case and the forward end of said case to the door, the rear end being held by the screw-threaded connection on the bushing. In the rear end of the plate D is a notch, d', which engages with a lug, c3, and holds the rear end of the plate D in place.
E is the bolt or latch which projects through the opening C. Said bolt is hollow and has a shoulder, e.
F is a spring which engages with the shoulder c at one end and at the other end with the outer side of the flange c', and normally holds said bolt extended beyond the door to engage with a suitable keeper secured to the doorj amb.
G is the outer door-knob having the shank G', provided with the collar G2 and the cylindrical extension G3, forming a part of the knob-spindle, in which is formed a hollow cylindrical chamber, G4. The extension G3 is inserted in the cylindrical bushing, and its inner end comes about flush with the inner end of said bushing. To the end of the extension G3 is secured a solid spindle, H, which is preferably rectangular in crosssection and extends through the yoke E and through an aperture in the plate D.
I is a collar secured on the spindle H, and is provided with wings I', which engage with the rear portion of the yoke and serve to withdraw the bolt as the spindle is turned by the knobs.
H is an inner knob secured to the end of the spindle H in any suitable manner.
K is' a key-hole formed in the outer knob and extending through the shank to communicate with the chamber G4.
L is alatch pivoted within the chamber G4 and having in front of its pivotal point the oppositely-inclined cam-surfaces l Z.
Z2 are rearwardly-extendin g arms formed on the latch and located on the opposite side of the pivot from the cam-surfaces. If desired, one arm can be used.

M is a spring-actuated follower mounted in the cylinder. m is the spring which holds said follower normally against the ends of the arm or arins Z2.
N is a longitudinal slot in the chamber G4.
O is a slot in the bushing. Then the lock put together and the latch is extended in its normal position the slots N and will register with each other.
P is the key. Vhen the lock is unlocked the end of the latch rests within the chamber G4. To lock the same, the key is inserted until it engages with the latch. Then by turning the key to the right the bit of said key engages with the cam-surface Z, forcing t-he follower back and moving the latch L out through the slot N until it engages with the slot O. Then said latch is in engagement with the slot O, thespindle cannot be turned and the bolt is held extended. The ends ot the arms Z2 having passed to one side of the pivot oi the latch, the follower moves forward and operates to hold said latch in a locked position. To unlock, the key is turned in the reverse direction and engages with the other cam-surface of said latch and draws it within the chamber G". The arms I2 then pass to the other side of the pivot and are held in this position by the follower. The spindle can then be turned to operate the bolt.
To the inside of the casing I pivotally secure a dead-lock latch, R., the end of which is adapted to engage with a lug or projection, E2, secured to the bolt and extending through a slot, C, in the case. lVhen the latch isin engagement with the lug` it holds the bolt or latch in a locked position.
It will be seen that to secure my improved lock to a door it is necessary to make but one hole in said door, through which the knobspindle extends, and that but two screws are used to hold the case in place.
My lock is very simple, is effective, secure, and desirable, and can be manufactured very cheaply.
llaving thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In a combined latch and lock, the combination, with a lock-case, a spring-actuated bolt mounted therein, a cylindrical bushing extending through the door and communicatin with the case, a slot in said bushing, a knob spindle having a cylindrical portion mounted in the bushing, a chamber formed in said cylindrical portion and having a slot adapted to register with the slot in the bushing when the spring-bolt is extended, intermediate actuating mechanism connecting the spindle and bolt, and a key-hole in one knob communicating with the hollow chamber, of a lockinglatch pivoted in the chamber in the spindle and having an arm projecting on one side ot' the pivot, a spring-actuated follower engaging with said arm to hold the latch in a locked or unlocked position, and two oppositely-inclined cam-surfaces formed on the latch on the side of the pivot opposite the follower and adapted to be engaged by the key-bit to throw the end of the latch in or out ot' slot in the spindle, to engage with the slot in the bushin or to withdraw it from said slot, so as to lock or unlock the spindle, all constructed, arranged, and opera-tin g substantially as shown and described.
2. In a lock, the combination, with thebushing B, extending through and rigidly secured to the door and having a screw-thread, b2, on its inner end, of the lock-case (l, having the circular screw-threaded aperture c, into which the threaded end ot' the bushing is screwed, the spring-actuated bolt E, and knob-spindle connected therewith, and the outer plate, D, having the notch fl', engaging with the lug n" on the case, and the downwardly-projecting side pieces, d, provided with screw-holes, all constructed and arranged substantially as shown and described.
