DOOR-LOCK.
i Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 13, '1917.
Application led February 5, 1914. Serial No. 816,792.
To all whom z't may concern.'
Be it known that I, DANIEL MCKAY, a
subject of the King of Great Britain, and
resident of the town of Arnprior, in the Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Door-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements 1n door locks, as described in the present specification, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings that form part of the same.
The invention consists essentially of the novel arrangement and construction of parts, whereby the latch-bolt moves later'- ally into a side opening of an operating tube having means therein operated by key and latch pin for closing said opening.
The objects of the invention are to devise a lock of simple and durable construction which will havea minimum number of operating parts and be readily applied to a door. y
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a cross scctional view of a door section having the lock and operating handles attached thereto.
Fig. 2 is an elevation view of the lock with the front plate of the facing removed.
Fig. 3 is a perspective detail view of the latch-bolt.
Fig. 4 is a perspective detail view of the knob-tube. Y
Fig. 5 is a perspective detail View of the locking tube.
Fig. 6 is a yperspective detail view of the slidable clutch end of the knob-tube.
Fig. 7 is a perspective detail view of one of the knobs.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
Referring to the drawings, `1 1s the lock casing shown in the accompanying drawings as a mortise lock, though it w1ll readily be understood that the casing may be made in any form or shape to be applied to the outside of a door if desired without departing from the spirit of my invention as hereinafter described.
2 is the front plate of the casing secured thereto by the screws 3 inserted through a suitable orifice in the front plate, and into a correspondingly threaded orifice in the back of the casing.
4 is the latch-bolt having the beveled latch end 5 as customary, the longitudinal slot 6, the forked end 7 with the angular-ly vturned extremities 8 and the tail-piece 9 extending between said forked end.
The latch-bolt 1 is fitted within the casing l with the beveled end projecting through a suitable opening inthe front of the casing as customary, and the screw 3 passing through the slot (3 at the inner end thereof, the compression spring 1() being inserted in said slot between the screw and the latch end of the latch-bolt, whereby said bolt is spring held with the latch end thereof projecting beyond the lock casing.
11 is the knob-tube extending `laterally through the side openings l2 in the cover plate and back of the lock casing, and between the forked ends of the latch-bolt immediately alongside the end of the taill piece 9.
13 is a circumferential fiange formed around the tube 11 immediately inside the back of the casing.
14 is a circumferential slot extending substantially halfway around the knob-tube 11 immediately next the flange I13 on the inside of the casing.
15 are tumbler arms secured to the knobtube 11 between the slot 14 and the front plate 2, said tumbler arms extending past the ends 8 of the latch-bolt 4, whereby on the rotation of the knob-tube in either direction one or other of said tumbler arms will engage with an end 8, and move the latchbolt 4 into the lock casingagainst the pressure of the spring 10, such action all being common in door lock construction.
16 is a circumferential slot extending substantially halfway around the knob-tube at' the end extending to the inside of the door.
17 is a threaded orifice in one side of the knob-tube adjacent the slot 16.
18 is a knob having the shank thereof fitting over the inner ends of the knob-tube 11, andthe screw 19 inserted through a suitable orifice in said shank, and into the threaded orifice 17, whereby said .knob is securely fastened to the knob 2.
20 is an inner tube fitting the knob-tube 11, and having a slot 21`in the periphery thereof registering with the slot 14 of said knob-tube. l
22 is a latch-pin having the inner' end thereof threaded, and extending through the slot 16 in the knob-tube, and into a correspondingly threaded orifice in the inner tube 20, whereby said inner tube is securely held in position from end movement within the knob-tube, but may be rotated inside said knob-tube by moving the latch-pin 22 around the slot 16.
, 23 is a circumferential groove extending around the inner tube 20, and having the fiat spring -24 bent therearound, and exerting continual pressureagainst the. inner periphery of the knob-tube, and causing sufiicient friction to retain said inner tube in any set position in said knob-tube.
The end of the inner tube 20 on the outside of the door is closed by the plate 25, said tube having the cross slot 26 therein.
27 is the outside door knob having the shank 28 thereof extending over the outer end of the knob-tube 11.
29 is a screw inserted through a suitable threaded orifice in the shank 28, having the inner end thereof extending into a circumferential groove 30 extending around the knob-tube 1l, whereby the handle 27 may be turned completely around without turning the knob-tube.
31 is a longitudinally extending slot in one side of the shank 28.
32 is a clutch tube having one end closed by the plate 33 having the orifice 34 therethrough.
The end of the clutch tube opposite the plate 33 is notched at 35 to interlock with the correspondingly tongued end 36 of the knob-tube.
37 is a spring-finger having one end thereof secured to the clutch tube 32, and the opposite end thereof projecting through the slot 31 in the shank 28.
38 isk a lug projecting outwardly-from the clutch tube 32, and into the slot 31 where it,7 extends as a groove 39 on\the inside of the shank 28.
40 is the key-hole formed in the center of the knob 27.
In the operation of the lock it will be'understood that the latch-bolt i may be readily Withdrawn into the lock casing by turning the knob 18, whereby the knob-tube 11 is turned and the tumbler arms 15 made to operate the latch-bolt as hereinbefore described, the tail-piece 9 of said latch-bolt always entering the slots 14 and 21 in the knob-tube and inner tube respectively, said slots being in register one with the other until it is desired to lock the door.
The door may be locked on the inside at any time desired by moving the latch-pin 22 around in the slot 16 in the knob-tube, thereby turning the inner tube 20 so that the slot 21 thereof is turned to the opposite Side of the knob-tube, thereby closing the slot 14, and preventing the entrance of the tail-piece 9, thus rendering the latch-bolt immovable and securely locking the door.
The clutch tube 32 is normally in the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, that islwith the notched end thereof interlocking with .the tongued end of the knob-tube, and as said clutch tube is pre-vented from rotation within the knob-shank 28 by means of the lug 38, the knob 27 will be normally connected to the knob-tube, and operate the latch-bolt in an exactly similar manner to the knob 18 as hereinbefore described.
To lock the door from the outside a key 41 may be inserted through the key-hole 40, said key being so shaped that it will pass through the orifice 34: in the clutch tube 32, and the end thereof enter the slot 26 in the end plate 25 of the inner tube 20. rlhe key may then be turned to turn the inner tube, and prevent movement of the latch-bolt in an exactly similar manner as the operation described with the turning of the latch-pin 22.
The outside knob 27 may be at any time operatively disconnected from the knob-tube by drawing the spring-finger 37 outwardly along the slot 31 in the knob-shank, until said spring-linger springs under the knobshank at the end of the slot 31.
This movement of the spring-finger draws the notched c nd of the clutch-tube out of engagement with the corresponding tongued end of the knob tube, leaving the knob free to be turned about on the said knob tube as hereinbefore explained, and without operative action of any kind on the latch-bolt, practically giving the same result as locking the door with a key.
When it is desired to again 4operatively connect the outside knob withthe knob-tube, 1t 1s only necessaryto insert the key to the end, the key being shaped so that only a part thereof will pass through the orifice in the clutch tube, when the larger portion of the key carries the clutch tube inwardly with it, until said clutch tube again engages with the knob-tube.
It will of course be understood that many having a peripheral slot into which the inner end of said latch-bolt extends and tumbler arms extending therefrom and engaging with said latch-bolt and a peripheral groove adjacent one end thereof, a knob having a central lore and fitting over one end of said knob-tube and having a longitudinal groove through the shank thereof into said bore, a screw inserted through a suitable orifice in the shank of said knob and into the groove in said knob-tube, an inner tube arranged Within said knob-tube and having a with the peripheral slot in said knob-tube and a closed end having a key recess therein, a clutch tube slidably arranged in the bore of said knob and interlocking with the end of said knob-tube and having a spring-finger extending into the longitudinal slot in said knob-shank and a closed end with a key peripheral slot registeringopening therethrough and a key inserted through the bore of said knob and the key opening in said clutch tube and fitting the key recess in said inner tube.
Signed at the city Ioi' Ottawa, Province of Ontario, Canada, this 16th day of Jannary, 1913.
