DOOR-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 431,674, dated July 8, 1890.
Application filed February 6, 1890. Serial No. 339,440. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, ROBERT G. PING and HIRAM MENDENHALL, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Audubon, county of Audubon, and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Door-Locks, of which the following is so full, clear, and exact a specification as will enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains, to make and use thesame, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Our invention consists of certain novel arrangements and combination, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, Figure 1 illustrates a side elevation of our lock with one plate of the case removed, showing the various parts. Fig. 2 is a detailed view of the keyhole and key with partsof the lock broken away.
A is the bolt. v
O C are the hub-wings, which are secured to the hub K, and which operate the bolt by engaging with the projecting posts B B on the bifurcated end of the bolt A. The hub and wings are operated by the spindle B, which is of ordinary construction. The bolt A is recessed on each side, forming shoulders E E,
. against which the end F of-the gravity-lever avoid engaging the stop M when the latter is not in use. The lever G is also recessed at D to receive the eccentric stop H, which looks the bolt. The stop II is secured to a circular ring, which is partly encircled by a raised rib D secured to the lock-casing, and said ring is provided internally with a projection E, against which the key engages to operate said stop.
An opening in the stop H to receive and accommodate the key K is designated by L. A slide M is operated by an external thumbpiece N, which extends out through the case and slides in a slot in thecase.
To fix the bolt in the mortise of the doorcasing in its normal position, when the door is closed insert the key in the opening L and turn the stop H until it abuts against the gravity-lever G, as shown in full lines in th drawings. To double the security of the lock, push the slide-bolt M, by means of the thumb-piece N, also against the gravity-lever G, which holds the bolt A positively against being opened from the outside.
To hold the bolt A within the'case, turn the stop H away from the gravity-lever G, withdraw bolt A into the case by means of the spindle B, actuated by a knob,and then slide bolt M, by means of the thumb-piece N, until it abuts against the gravity-lever G.
The bolt A is provided with oppositely-extending projections A A, which abut against the sides of the opening inthe case through which the bolt extends to limit its outward movement.
What we claim, and that which we wish to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a gravity-lock, the main bolt having oppositely-disposed shoulders and oppositelydisposed projections to limit its outward movement and bifurcated at its rear, in combination with means for withdrawingthe bolt, a gravity-lever,which is pivoted eccentrically, and which engages with the shoulders E of the bolt, and which is recessed at two adjacent sides to accommodate two lockin -stops, a sliding stop, which slides in a slot in the casing and having a projecting thumb-piece for operating the same, and an eccentric stop secured toaring which rotates within a raised rib, and which has an internal projection for the key, as and for the purposes specified.
