Filed lune 13, 1960, Ser. No. 35,615 13 Claims. (Cl. 292-169) This invention relates to rim lock sets and more particularly to mounting means therefor.
It is an object of this invention to provide a lock set having improved mounting means which makes it possible quickly and easily to install the set on a door, with provision for actuation of the bolt from either side of the door.
It is another object to provide a door lock assembly including a mounting member which is adjustably supported Within the lock case for movement longitudinally of a lock operating member, and wherein the mounting member also supports a retainer member in spaced relation .to the case, whereby a door may be securely clamped between the retainer member and the case, responsive to adjustment of the supporting member.
Another object of this invention is to provide a rim lock set which includes a novel preassembled unit wherein a lock case contains a spring loaded bolt, a spindle, bolt retracting means operable upon rotation of the spindle, and a mounting member having a portion projecting with the spindle from one side of the case for extension with the spindle through an opening in the door to enable disposition of the case against one side of the door, there being means on the mounting member for securing thereto a member for engaging the other side of the door to hold the set in place, and the spindle being arranged with its ends disposed on opposite sides of the door for reception of knobs.
A further object is the provision of a rim lock set such as described in which a lock case, a spring loaded bolt, a spindle, means for retracting the bolt upon rotation of the spindle, a mounting member adapted to be passed with a spindle through a hole of small diameter in a door, means connecting the case and mounting member for relative movement axially of the mounting member, and adjusting means for effecting said relative movement, are constructed and arranged as a compact preassembled unit subject to being readily installed on doors of different thicknesses, it only being necessary to insert the mounting member and spindle of this unit through the hole in the door so that the case engages one side of the door, then to adjustably secure on the mounting member a nut or similar element which will engage the other side of the door to prevent withdrawal of the mounting member, and thereafter to operate the adjusting means for efiecting such relative movement of the case and mounting member as required to securely clamp the set on the door.
An additional object of this invention is the provision of a preassembled rim lock unit such as next above noted wherein the case with the mounting member, spindle and other elements assembled therein may be sealed or formed to provide a permanently preassemb-led unitary structure with one knob preferably permanently connected with the spindle at one side of the case, and the other knob being relesably connected with the spindle on the other side of the door, whereby upon removal thereof and removal of the not or similar element which prevents withdrawal of the mounting member, the preassembled unit may be withdrawn from the door.
A further object of this invention is to provide a rim lock set wherein the mounting means and spindle are of tubular form and concentrically arranged in a manner making it possible readily to install in the set various 3,099,472 Patented July 30, 1963 ice types of manual or key operated lock units for operation on either or both sides of the door to releasably lock the bolt in looking position.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter described or :will become apparent to those skilled in the art, and the novel features of the invention will be defined in the appended claims.

The illustrative embodiment of a rim lock set made in accordance with this invention as here shown, generally comprises a lock case 1 adapted to be mounted on one side of a door 2. and provided with a spring loaded bolt 3, a spindle '4 which as here shown is tubular, bolt retracting means 5 connected to the bolt and operable upon rotation of the spindle, knobs 6 and secured to the ends of the spindle, and a mounting member 8 also here shown as tubular and which is connected with the case so as to provide for relative movement of the case and mounting member axially of the latter.
The mounting member 8 is carried by the case so that it may be inserted with the spindle 4 through a hole 9 extending transversely through the door 2, and when thus extended, a combined nut and rosette unit 10 .is mounted on a screw threaded portion thereof whereby the nut element 11 may be adjusted axially to engage the side of the door opposite that engaged by the case 1.
The case 1 also contains adjusting means generally denoted at 12 which may be operated from the exterior of the case for efiecting relative movement of the case and mounting member to clamp the lock set on the door. It should be noted that the mounting member 8 is of such length as to permit of the installation of the lock set on doors of varying thicknesses.
Preferably, the case 1 with the mechanisms therein, including the spindle 4 and mounting member 8 connected thereto, is presassernbled to form a sealed unitary structure as shown in FIG. 1, and which may include one of the knobs fixed to the spindle at the outer side of the case. With the set thus made as a permanently assembled unit, it is apparent that it may be quickly and easily mounted on a door with the aid of the combined nut and rosette unit 11 As a safeguard against angular movement of the lock case 1 about the axis of the spindle 4, the case may be secured to the door by means of screw fastenings 13:.
Referring more specifically to the construction of the set, it will be seen that the case 1 includes a flanged rectangular cover 14- and a backing plate 15 between which is confined a rigid body plate 16 having flanges 17 and 13 along its longitudinal and end edges, respectively. The cover 14 and backing plate 15 may be securely fastened together after assembling in the case 1, the spring loaded bolt 3 and associated elements including the spindle 4, mounting member 8 and the adjusting means 12, to provide the preassembled and sealed unit shown in FIG. 1. This secure fastening may be accomplished as here shown, by crimping edges of the flanges of the cover 14 as at 19 over the backing plate 15.
The bolt 3 is slidable through openings 21) and 21 in the flanges of the body plate 16 and cover 14, respectively,
at one end of the case 1, being mounted on a draw bar 22 slidably supported in the case by means of the spindle 4 and a guide plate 23. The guide plate 23 slidahly abuts the body plate 16 and has pairs of spaced flanges 24 at its ends adapted to abut the back plate 15. The guide plate 23 is held in place by its contact with the back plate :15 and body plate 16 and by means of the spindle 4 which is passed through an opening 25 in the guide plate.
An opening 26 is provided in the draw bar 22 for reception of the spindle 4, the draw bar being guided between the pairs of flanges 24 on the plate 23. A flat coiled spring 27 confined on the draw bar 22 between the bolt 4 and a pair of the flanges 24 on the guide plate 23, normally extends the bolt into position for latched engagement with a suitable striker plate such as the plate 28 shown in FiGS. 2 and 3.
The bolt retracting means includes a connection between the spindle 4 and the draw bar 22 such that rotation of the spindle in either direction will retract the bolt. As here'shown, this connection is efiected by means of a pair of shoulders 29 spaced about the margin of the opening 26 in the draw bar 22 and a pair of shoulders 30 formed at the ends of an arcuate slot 31 in the tubular spindle 4. The slot 31 accommodates the draw bar so that the shoulders 29 on the draw bar will abut the shoulders 30 on the spindle.
The draw bar 22, .guide plate 23, spring 27, and spindle 4 may be assembled :as a unit before mounting these elements in the case 1 and before connecting thereto the tubular mounting member 8. This initial assembling operation can be eflected by placing the draw bar 22 so that it will slide on the guide plate 23 between the pairs of flanges 24, with the spring 27 abutting the bolt 3 and the outer sides of a pair of the flanges 24 at one end of the plate 23. The draw bar 22 is limited as to its movement by shoulders 22a and 22b thereon disposed to abut the flanges 24, as will be seen with reference to FIG. 3. The spring 27 may be mounted on the draw bar 22 while the bolt 3 is removed from the draw bar, after which the bolt is fixed on the draw bar by means of the pin 3a. With the draw bar 22 and plate 23 assembled in this manner, it is necessary to align the opening 26 in the draw bar with the opening 25 in the guide plate 23 in order that the spindle 4 may be inserted through these openings. This requires that the bolt 3 and draw bar 22 be retracted and held against the action of the spring 27 so that the opening 26 in the draw bar will register with the opening 25 in the plate 23, and while these openings are in registration with one another, the end of the spindle having a lug 32 thereon adjacent the slot 31 is inserted through the aligned openings, there being a slot 54a in the draw bar and a notch or recess 34 in the guide plate 23 to permit the lug 32 to pass through the openings 26 and 25, whereby the spindle may be inserted as required to bring the lug 32 back of the guide plate 23. The spindle is turned after being thus inserted, so that the lug 32 will abut the back of the guide plate to prevent withdrawal of the spindle.
After the spindle 4 is positioned as above stated in the openings 26 and 25, the draw bar 22 is released and the spring 27 extends the bolt 3, and in so doing, brings the shoulders 29 on the draw bar into abutting relation with the shoulders 36 on the spindle whereby upon rotation of the spindle in either direction the bolt will be retracted against the action of the spring 27.
Having preassembled the guide plate 23, draw bar 22 and spindle 4 as above noted, this preassembled unit is ready to be placed in the case 1 so that the end of the spindle projecting from the guide plate 23 may be inserted through registering openings 85 and 36 in the body plate 16 and cover '14, respectively. This requires that the bolt 3 and draw bar 22 be retracted so that the bolt may be positioned against the body plate 16 opposite the registering openings 20 and 21 (see FIG. 3) in the flanges of the body plate and cover, respectively. When the bolt 3,
positioned in this manner, and the spindle 4 are aligned with the openings 35 and 36, the bolt may be released and the spindle then passed through these openings. When the parts of the lock set are assembled in this manner, the lug 32 on the spindle is accommodated in an enlargement o-r annular recess 37 of the opening 36 in the body plate so that the guide plate 23 will rest firmly against the body plate 16 while the lug 32 engages the back of the guide plate, as shown in FIG. 2, so as to prevent withdrawal of the spindle.
When the spindle has been assembled with the body plate 16 and cover 14 as next above noted, one of the knobs, for example the knob 6, may be mounted on the end or" the spindle 4 extending outwardly through the cover. In this connection, it will be noted that the tubular shank 6a of the knob is provided with an inwardly struck lug 33 adapted to be engaged in a slot 32 in the spindle 4 so that the spindle and knob are locked against relative rotation. If desired, the knob may be permanently fixed to the spindle by striking inwardly a portion 6b of the knob shank 6a so that it lies within an opening 40 in the spindle, this inwardly struck portion remaining in integral formation with the shank, as shown in FIG. 2.
Following this assembly of the spindle 4, mounting plate 23, draw bar 22 and bolt 3 with the spring 27 in the case 1, before the back plate closes the case 1, the tubular mounting member 8 is mounted in place so as to surround the spindle. The tubular mounting member 8 has an annular platealilce adjusting member 41 rigidly fixed to one end thereof as by being staked thereto, there being portions 42 of this end of the mounting member struck radially outwardly to engage in notches. 43 in the adjusting member 41.
The mounting member 8 is inserted onto the spindle 4 with the adjusting member 41 innermost and disposed so that lugs 44 (see FIG. 4) projecting from opposite sides of member 41 will be slidably engaged between the pairs of spaced flanges 24 on the guide plate 23. Inasmuch as the outer end of the tubular mounting member 8 is reduced circumierentially as at 45, as shown in FIG. 2, for purposes to be hereinafter described, it is necessary to retract a detent member 46 which normally has an end portion 46' projecting through an opening 47 in the spindle, so that the reduced portion 45 of the mounting member will clear the end portion 46' in completing the inward sliding movement of the mounting member 8 to slidably position the lugs 44 between the flanges 24. The detent member 46 is urged into extended position by a small leaf spring 48, as shown in FIG. 5, and is installed in the bore of the spindle 4 through a narrow arcuate slot 49 opposite the opening 47 and is held in place by the spring 48 which engages the detent member 46 and is wider than the slot. This spring is inserted through the adjacent open end of the bore of the spindle and positioned to bridge the slot 43 and to urge the portion 46 of the detent out through the opening 47.
When the mounting member 8 and adjusting member 41 are properly positioned, screw threaded openings 50 in the adjusting member 41 register with openings 51 and 52 in the guide plate 23, for accommodating screws 53 and 54 tbreadedly engaged with the openings 50 in the adjusting member 41. The draw bar 22 accommodates the screws 53 and 54 through a slot 53:: and the slot 54a, respectively, as shown in FIG. 3. These screws have their heads exposed on the outer face of the cover 14 and against the body plate 16, and together with the member 41 constitute the adjusting means 12 which provides for relative adjustment of the mounting member 8 and case 1 in a direction axially of the spindle 4. It will be noted that the case 1 and adjusting member 41 are permitted considerable relative axial movement by reason of the slidable engagement of the lugs 44 with the flanges 24 of the guide plate 23, as will be clear with reference to FIG. 2. FIG. 2 also shows in dashed lines D an extreme position of the adjusting member 41 from which maximum relative adjustment of the case 1 and mounting member 8 may be effected upon screwing down the adjusting screws 53 and 54.
While the tubular mounting member 8 and the spindle '4 of the preassembled unit, as shown in FIG. 1, are inserted through the opening 9 in the door, the combined nut and rosette unit 10 is position-ed on the end of the mounting member 8 which projects through the door so that the nut element 11 lot the rosette unit will engage the screws threads 55 provided exteriorly of the mounting member whereby the nut and rosette unit may be axially advanced on the mounting member 8 to engage the adjacent face of the door. Once the nut and rosette unit 10 is engaged with the door, the screws 53 and 54 on the outer side of the case are rotated so that such relative movement of the adjusting member 41 and case 1 will take place as required for clamping the case -1 securely against the door. After this adjustment is made the screw fastening 113 may be applied if desired, as indicated in FIG. 2.
Completion of installation of the lock set is effected when applying the other knob '7 to the portion of the spindle 4 projecting outwardly from the nut and rosette unit 10. The shank 7a of the knob 7 is inserted over the tubular spindle 4- so that an inwardly disposed lug 7b on the shank will slide in a slot '70 in the spindle. The shank 7a is provided with an opening 7d to receive the projecting end 46 of the detent member 46 for releasably locking the knob on the spindle.
As here shown, a ferrule 56 may be fixed to the mounting member 8 before inserting the shank 7a of the knob 7 onto the spindle, the purpose of the ferrule being to cover the end of the spindle that projects beyond the mounting member 8 as well as to cover the end 46' of the detent member 46. This [ferrule has edge portions at one end crimped as at 57 into openings 58 formed by the inwardly offset or reduced portion '45 of the mounting member 8. The outer end of the ferrule is provided with a short inwardly directed annular change 59' which rests on the shank 7a of the knob 7 and spaces the ferrule sufiiciently from the shank 7a to permit the detent member 46 to extend through the opening 7d in the knob shank 7a.
It should be noted that the rim lock set may be removed from the door as readily as it was installed, it being necessary first to remove the knob 7. This removal of the knob '7 may be effected by turning the knob and spindle 4 so that an opening 60 in the ferrule, as shown in FIG. 5, comes into registration with the projecting end 46' of the detent member 46, whereupon insertion of a suitable tool, not shown, in the opening 60 will permit of forcing the detent member 46 inwardly and thus release the knob 7 which may then be readily withdrawn axially from the spindle. After removing the knob 7, the combined nut and rosette member 10 is unscrewed and removed from the mounting member 8, and the preassembled unit may be readily withdrawn from the door after removal of the screw fastenings 13.
It should be noted that the rim lock set in having both the spindle 4 and the mounting member 8 of tubular formation readily lends itself to incorporation in the set of suitable key actuated or manually operable locking means for releasably locking the bolt in locked position.
It is also important to note that the tubular rim lock set with the preformed unit A permanently assembled as shown in 'FIG. 1, [facilitates installation of the set in a door, it only being necessary to provide a simple hole transversely through the door, to insert the member 8 through this hole, to apply the nut and rosette unit 10, and then screw down the adjusting screws 53 and 54, to securely clamp the set on the door, this arrangement also making it possible to install the set on doors of different thicknesses.
While specific structural details have been shown and described, it should be understood that changes and alterations may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a rim lock set having a case adapted to be engaged with one side of a door and containing a bolt, spring means biasing the bolt to extended position, a rotary spindle projecting from the case for extension through an opening in the door, and means operable to retract the bolt upon rotation of said spindle: the improvement 'which includes a mounting member carried by said case and disposed to be extended with said spindle through said opening in the door upon placing the case against said one side of the door; means on said mounting member for securing thereto an element for engaging the other side of the door to hold the set in place on the door; and means securing said mounting member within said case including a pair of members between the walls of the case arranged with one member of said pair supported by the other member and fixed to one end of said mounting member.
2. In a rim lock set having a case adapted to be engaged with one side of a door and containing a bolt, spring means biasing the bolt to extended position, a rotary spindle projecting from the case for extension through an opening in the door, :and means operable to retract the bolt upon rotation of said spindle: the improvement which includes a mounting member carried by said case and disposed to be extended with said spindle through said opening in the door upon placing the case against said one side of the door; said mounting memher and said spindle being tubular; said spindle extending through said mounting member and said case with its ends disposed on opposite sides of the door for reception of knobs; means on said mounting member for securing thereto an element for engaging the other side of the door to hold the set in place; and a member fixed to one end of said mounting member and movable within and relative to said case.
3. In a rim lock set having i3. case adapted to be engaged with one side or a door and containing a bolt, spring means biasing the bolt to extended position, a rotary spindle projecting from the case for extension through an opening in the door, and means operable to retract the bolt upon rotation of said spindle: the improvement which includes a mounting member carried by said case and disposed to be extended with said spindle through said opening in the door upon placing the case against said one side of the door; means on said mounting member for axially adjustably mounting thereon an element for engaging the other side of the door to hold the set on the door, and means operably securing said mounting member within said case including a securing member fixed to one end of said mounting member, and means supporting said tsecuring member.
4. In a rim lock set having a case adapted to be engaged with one side of a door and containing a bolt, spring means biasing the bolt to extended position, a rotary spindle carried by the case in position to be extended through an opening in the door, and means operable to retract the bolt upon rotation of said spindle: the improvement which includes a mounting member projecting from said ease and disposed to be extended with said spindle through said opening in the door upon placing the case against said one side of the door; adjusting means movable relative to and within said case connecting said mounting member and ease tor relative movement axially of said mounting member; means on said mounting member operable for securing thereto an element for engaging the other side of the door to prevent Withdrawal of said mounting member from said opening; and means connected with said adjusting means and movable relative to said case for eifecting said relative laxia'l movement.
5. In a rim lock set having a case adapted to be engaged with one side of a door, a bolt, spring means biasing the bolt to extended position, a rotary spindle carried by the case in position to be extended through an opening in the door, and means operable to retract the bolt upon rotation of said spindle: the improvement which includes a mounting member projecting from said case and disposed to be extended with said spindle through said opening in the door upon placing the case against said one side of the door; adjusting means movable in either direction between opposed walls of said case connecting said mounting member and case for relative movement axially of said mounting member; means on said mounting member operable for securing thereto for axial adjustment thereon an element for engaging the other side of the door to prevent withdrawal of said mounting member from said opening; and means on one wall of said case connected with said adjusting means and movable relative to said one wall for eifecting said relative axial movement.
6. In a rim lock set having a case adapted to be engaged with one side of a door, a bolt, spring means biasing the bolt to extended position, a rotary spindle carried by the case in position to be extended through an opening in the door, and means operable to retract the bolt upon rotation of the spindle: the improvement which includes a tubular mounting member surrounding said spindle and carried by said case in position to be extended with said spindle through said opening in the door upon placing the case against said one side of the door; adjusting means movable between and relative to opposed walls of said case connecting said case and mounting member for relative movement axially of said mounting member; means on said mounting member for securing thereto means for engaging the other side of the door to prevent withdrawal of said mounting member; and operating means for said adjusting means movable relative to said case and said adjusting means and operable from the exterior of said case for effecting said relative movement of said mounting member and case to clamp the set on the door.
7. In a rim lock set having a case adapted to be engaged with one side or" a door, a bolt, spring means biasing the bolt to extended position, a rotary spindle carr ed by the case in position to be extended through an opening in the door, and means operable to retract the bolt upon rotation of the spindle: the improvement which includes a mounting member adjustably carried by said case in position to be extended with said spindle through sa d opening in the door upon placing the case against said one side of the door; means on said mounting member for securing thereto means tfior engaging the other side of the door; ladjusting means said case movable relative thereto and operable tor effecting relative adjustment of said'mounting member and said case; and operating members connected with said adjusting means and case and movable relative thereto from the exterior of said case for actuating said adjusting means to effect said adjustment of said mounting member; said spindle having its ends disposed on opposite sides of the door for reception of knobs.
8. In a rim lock set having a case adapted to be engaged with one side of a door, a bolt, spring means biasing the bolt to extended position, a rotary spindle carried by the case in position to be extended through an opening in the door, and means operable to retract the bolt upon rotation of the spindle: the improvement which includes a mounting member carried by said case in position to be extended with said spindle through said opening in the door when the [case is placed against said one side of the door; an annular member fixed on said mounting member and movable within and relative to said case; said mounting member having screw threads thereon; a screw threaded member threadedly engaged with said screw threads on said mounting member for engaging the other side of the door to prevent Withdrawal of said mounting member; and means operatively connected with said annular member and said case and movable relative thereto tor effecting said relative movement of said mounting member and case to clamp said screw threaded member and said case against the door.
9. In a rim lock set having a case adapted to be engaged with one side of a door, a bolt, spring means biasing the bolt to extended position, a rotary spindle carried by the case in position to be extended through an opening in the door, and means operable to retract the bolt upon rotation of the spindle: the improvement which includes a tubular mounting member carried by said case in position to be extended with said spindle through said opening in the door; said spindle being disposed within said mounting member; means on said mounting member for axially adjustably securing thereto an element for engaging the other side of the door to restrain movement of said mounting member in a direction toward said one side of the door; an adjusting member mounted in said case and rigidly connected with said tubular mounting member; and means connecting said adjusting member to said case and permitting relative movement between said case and said adjusting member axially of said spindle; said last named means including screw means operable exteriorly of said case for elfecting said relative movement.
10. In a rim lock set having a case adapted to be engaged with one side of a door, a bolt, spring means biasing the bolt to extended position, a rotary spindle carried by the case in position to be extended through an opening in the door, and means operable to retract the bolt upon rotation of said spindle: the improvement which includes a mounting member projecting from said case and disposed to be extended with said spindle through said open ing in the door; a guide plate in said case having pairs of flanges at opposite ends; said means rfior retracting the bolt including a draw bar slidable between said flanges; said draw bar, guide plate and case having registering openings through which said spindle extends; means on said mounting member for securing on said mounting member an element for engaging the other side of the door; an adjusting member fixed to said mounting member and movable axially of said spindle between said flanges; and adjusting means connecting said case and said adjusting member for relative movement axially of said spindle; said adjusting means being operable exteriorly of said case for effecting said relative movement.
11. In a rim lock set having a case adapted to be engaged with one side of a door, a bolt, spring means biasing the bolt to extended position, a rotary spindle carried by the case in position to be extended through an opening in the door, and means operable to retract the bolt uponrotation of the spindle: the improvement which includes a tubular mounting member carried by said case in position to be extended with said spindle through said opening in the door; said spindle being disposed within said mounting member; means on said mounting member for axially adjustably securing thereto an element for engaging the other side of the door to restrain movement of said mounting member in [a direction toward said one side of the door; an adjusting member rigidly secured to said mounting member within said case; means connecting said case and said adjusting member for relative movement axially of said spindle; said last named means including a guide plate mounted in said case and having flanges between which said adjusting member is axially movable; and means operable exteriorly of the case for effecting said relative movement of said case and adjusting member.
12. A preassembled rim lock structure including a lock case; a spring loaded bolt in said case; a rotary spindle mounted within said case and projecting from opposite sides of said case; bolt retracting means in said case operable upon rotation of the spindle; a tubular mounting member carried by said case and projecting from one side thereof for insertion with said spindle through an opening of a door to position the case against one side of the door; means located on said tubular mounting member in position to be exposed on the other side of the door for securing to said tubular mounting member an element 9 for engaging said other side of the door to hold the set in place with said spindle disposed for operation on opposite sides of the door; and means for connecting said mounting member with said case including 13. securing member fixed to one end of said mounting member and disposed in said case for movement With said mounting member relative to said case.

Claims (1)

13. A DOOR LOCK COMPRISING: A CASE; A BOLT PROJECTING FROM SAID CASE; AN ELONGATED OPERATING MEMBER EXTENDING THROUGH SAID CASE AT A RIGHT ANGLE TO SAID BOLT; MEANS FOR RETRACTING SAID BOLT UPON OPERATION OF SAID OPERATING MEMBER; A MOUNTING MEMBER EXTENDING ALONG SAID OPERATING MEMBER FROM WITHIN SAID CASE; MEANS FOR EFFECTING MOVEMENT OF SAID MOUNTING MEMBER LONGITUDINALLY OF SAID OPERATING MEMBER INCLUDING A MEMBER ENGAGED WITH SAID MOUNTING MEMBER AND SUPPORTED IN THE CASE FOR AXIAL MOVEMENT RELATIVE THERETO; AND A RETAINER RELEASABLY CONNECTABLE TO SAID MOUNTING MEMBER IN SPACED RELATION TO SAID CASE.
