Description

M. LIGHT.
DOOR-LOCK. No.1r74,264. Patented Feb. 29,1876.
N.FE|'ERS, PHOTO-LITNOGRAFHER. WASHINGTONv D C.
UNI ED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
MOSE S"LIGHT, OF MANHEIM, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO JOHN S. HENRY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT lN DOOR-LOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 174,264, dated February 29, 1876; application filed? January 11, 1876. v
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Moses LIGHT, of Manheim, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to 7 end \iewthereof. Figs. 5 and 6 are views of the keys thereof.
A represents the door, to the inside of which the lock-case .B is secured in. the usual manner. O is the lock-bolt, provided with notches w in its upper edge, into which takes a springhook,D, for holding the bolt in position either out or in. This spring-hook is formed with a curved arm,.\vhich is operated by one of the wards of the key, so as to lift the spring-hook when the bolt is to be moved either out or in, in the usual manner. E is the ordinary latch of the lock, to be operated by a knob or handle, G, on either side of the door. Under the bolt (J of the lock is a spring or spring-plate,
H, formed or provided with a projection, d,-
which, when the bolt is moved outward to lock the door, springs behind a projection or shoulder, 0, on the under edge of the bolt, so that the said bolt cannot be turned back until this projection d is pushed back. This is done by .means of a pin or short rod, I, inserted from the outside of the door through a false keyhole, K From the inside this projection is pulled back by means of a small knob, J, having its stem connected with the spring H. The regular key-hole K is closed within the look by means of a plate, L, which is placed on the shank or spindle of the knobs G for the latch B, so that the key K cannot be inserted in the lockuntil, by turning either of the knobs G, the plate L is turned away from the key-hole. Above and below the lock, on the inside of the door, are ordinary bolts, M M, sliding in suitable keepers. These bolts are, by rods N N, connected with a slide; 0, within the lock, said rods being pivoted to the door, as shown. This slide is formed with suitable recesses in its upper edge for the ward of the key towork in and move said slide.
Supposing the lock to be locked, the operation to open the same from the outside is as follows: Turn the outside knob or handle Gr, which removes the plate L from the key-hole K and raises the latch E. Then insert the key K in the key-hole K and the pin I in the blind key-hole K Press on said pin while turning the key, and the bolt 0 will move back; and continue turning the key until it moves the slide 0, which opens the bolts M.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new,-and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The key-hole guard L, attached to and turning with the spindle of the knob G, in combination with the latch E, lock-bolt (J, and outer key-hole K all constructed and arranged as and for the purpose set forth. 1
2. The combination of the lock bolt 0, springhook D with arm a,1a'tch E, spring H with projection d, slide 0, pivoted connecting-rods N N, and bolts M M, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MOSES. LIGHT.
Witnesses WILLIAM ULRICH, HORACE DAs'HER.
