UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST PET'IERSON, OF ST. CLOUD, MINNESOTA.
DOOR-LOCK.
Application filed July 21, 1910.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUous'r PnrrnnsoN, a. subject of the King of Sweden, residing at St. Cloud, in the county of Stearns and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door- Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to door locks. Its object is to produce a lock that is simple and cheap to manufacture.
With this and other objects in view the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described in the following specification, pointed out in the claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawing which forms a part of said specification and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, showing the internal mechanism with the bolt protruding. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the bolt withdrawn. Fig. 3 is a section on line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section on line 4-4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 illustrates the key used.
Like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
2 is the lock casing having key holes 3, 3 and an opening 4 in one end to permit the operation of a bolt 5 which bolt is further supported in a slotted member 6 which is made integral with the casing and through the slot C of which the bolt operates.
7, 7 are a pair of fingers secured to the inner end of bolt 5 and terminating in pegs 8 each engaging one extremity of a pivoted clutch 9 which operates on a pivot 10 secured in the casing. A pair of handles 11 operating in sleeves 12 made integral with one side of the casing have one extremity engaging the opposite end of the clutch 9 to actuate the same. These handles 11 terminate in knobs 13 outside the lock casing and serve to withdraw the bolt 5 when it is desired to unlock the device.
14 is a transverse lug arranged on bolt 5 near its free extremity in a position between the end of the casing 2 and a tumbler 15 that is secured toa shaft 16 which is supported in standards 17 said shaft being disposed at right angles to the bolt 5, secured, to one end of the casing.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 20, 1912.
Serial No. 573,080.
18 is the key, provided with a right angled bit 19, of hollow construction and adapted to enter the key hole 3 and engage the shaft 1.6 to which is secured the tumbler 15.
20 is a coil spring mounted on a peg 21 secured to one side of the casing; one end of spring 20 engages the bolt 5 and the other engages a small lug 22 projecting from the casing, the effect of this spring being to keep the bolt 5 normally projecting through the opening in the casing which keeps the device locked.
When it is desired to set the lock against the entry of others than those provided with the key 18 this key is inserted in the lock casing and the tumbler thrown into the position shown in Figs. 1 and 4 which places it in the way of transverse lug 14 should an attempt be made to withdraw the bolt by means of handles 11. Before the lock can be opened by these handles, which are the only means of opening it, the key must be inserted and the tumbler thrown away from lug 14 or in the position shown in Fig. 2 or shown dotted in Fig. 4, in which position it rests upon a lug B made integral with the casing.
l/Vhat is claimed is:
In a lock, a casing formed with integral sleeves, handles within said sleeves, a bolt slidable in said casing, a pair of fingers terminally carried by said bolt, a pair of pivoted clutches connecting said fingers and the aforesaid handles; a key shaft disposed transversely of the bolt, a. tumbler arranged on said key shaft, a transverse lug arranged on said bolt between its free termination and the plane of the key shaft, a transverse lug arranged in one end of the casing, a projecting lug disposed within the casing and a spring connecting the last named lug and the aforesaid bolt.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of sub-scribing wltnesses.
AUGUST PETTER SON.
