IMPRovEMl-:NT IN sAsH-FAsTENERs.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,963, dated February 18, 1873.

To allpwhom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RANsoM E. BEcKwITH, of Nashua, in the county of Hillsborough and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful or Improved Sash-Fastening; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawing, of which- Figure 1 is a front elevation, Fig. 2 a top view, and Fig. 3 an end view, of it. Fig. 4 is a view of it with the case-cap removed, the same showing thel arrangement of the two bolts and their actuating-spring. Fig. 5 is a top view, Fig. 6 an edge view, of the lockingtraveler; and Fig. 7, a longitudinal section of the lock. Fig. 8 is an under-side view of the upper, and Fig. 9 is a like view of the lower, of the two bolts.

The said sash fastening or lock, like that heretofore patented to me, is intended to be let into or sunk in a window-frame, so that the bolt-carrying projection may be within and make part of the parting tongue between the two next contiguous sashgrooves, one of the bolts of the lock being shot forward and the other retracted, in order to effect the locking of the sashes.

In the drawing, A denotes the lock-case as made or provided withthe bolt-carrying projection B, and having a cover or cap-plate, C, all arranged as shown. The heads a b of the two bolts D E extend out of the case and play through the projection B, they, when bolted, extending in opposite direction out of it. The Shanks c d of the bolts are within the case, and are provided with abutments e f, between which and the shank a helical spring,\F, is arranged, as shown. The said spring serves to actuate both boltsthat is, to advance one, D, and retract the other, E--so as to cause them to enter notches or recesses in the two sashes, and lock the said sashes. Each bolt is furnished lwith a knob, g, for retracting or moving it; and there is also a key-hole, c', in the cap of the lock-case.

The lock, as above described, is analogous to one for which Letters Patent No. 133,916,

dated December 17, 1872have been granted` V to me.

I have added to the lock last referred to a device or means of locking either or both of the bolts when either advanced or retracted, such means consisting of a rotary latohingtumbler and certain notches or recesses in the bolts, such tumbler to be actuated by a key inserted in it and the key-hole. The said tumbler, formed as shown in the drawing and marked G, has a pivot, l, to enter a corresponding hole, m, in the bottom of the lockcase. The tumbler is arranged between the shanks of the two bolts, which project over it, there being on the lower of them a lockingnotch, fn. The other or upper `bolt has such another locking-notch, o, an auxiliary notch,

g, and projects over the tumbler, the projections over the tumbler being merely to keep it in place. At its rear the tumbler is notched at p, to operate with a bow-spring, q, formed and arranged as shown. The said spring serves to hold the tumbler in either of itsltwo positions.v Within the tumbler is a slot or key-hole, r, to receive the head of the key, such key being as shown in side View in Fig. 10. I

By inserting the key in the tumbler, and

vturning it so as to partiallyrevolve the latter, such tumbler may be caused to lock both bolts when in the sashes, or when they may be drawn out of them; or either bolt may be locked when either advanced or retracted.

I herein make no claim to the sash-fastener described in my said patent; but

I claim- A The combination of the rotary bolting-tumbler G, having its spring q, with the sash-fastener provided with the bolt-carrying projection B, (to extend into and make part of the parting-tongue of the two sashgrooves,) and with the two bolts D E having locking-notches n o, all arranged in the lockicase, and with respect to the said projection B, substantially as specied.
