IMPROVEMENT IN LOCKlNG-LATCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,353, dated November 23, 1875 application filed April 29,1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUS DRUOKLIEB, of Jersey UityHeights, in the county of Budson and State .of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Latch-Locks, of which the following is a specification This invention is illustrated in the accompanyin g drawing, in which- Figure 1 represents an inside view of the locking mechanism, when the bolt acts as a latch. Fig. 2 isa similar view of the same when the bolt is thrown forward in its locking position.

This invention consists in the combination of a tumbler, tumbler-spring, latch-bolt, key and armed hub, the tumbler being connected to the latch by a notched slot, while the latch is provided with a recess to engage with the key in such a manner that the tumbler and the latch-bolt are subjected to the'action-ot' the same spring, and that when the armed hub is turned, it acts through the tumbler on the latch-bolt, while by turning the key the latchbolt can be thrown forward in its locking position independent of the tumbler.
- In the drawing, the letter A designates the case of my lock, in which moves the latch-bolt B, said case being provided with two or more lugs, a, which form the guides for the tail of the latch-bolt.
From the face of the tail of the latch-bolt projects a stud, b, which engages withrecesses a c 111 a slot, cl, formed in the body of the tumbler G. This tumbler is placed on the top of the latch-bolt, and it is held down by the back plate of the lock-case (not shown in the drawing.) The rear end of said tumbler is constructed with two arms, so as to straddle or have interposed between them the hub D, the arms of which act on downwardly-projectinglips e of the tumbler, which lips bear upon A spring, E, bears upon the rear edge of one of the arms of the tumbler and presses the same forward against a stud, F, which rises from the inner surface of the case A.
In the lower edge of the tail of the latchbolt is a recess, g, to engage with the key K, and the lower edge of the tumbler is rounded, so that when the latch-bolt is in the position shown in Fig. 1, and the key is turned from I left to right, the recess 0 of the tumbler is first raised up from the stud b, then the latchbolt is thrown forward to the position shown in Fig. 2, and finally the recess 0 of the tumbler drops in gear with the stud b. By this I110- tion the latch-bolt is thrown in its locking position, and the door or other device to which my lock is attached cannot be opened without the key. But if the latch-bolt is moved to the position shown in Fig. 1, it can be moved in and out by the action of the armed hub .D on the tumbler O, and the door or other device to which my lock is attached can be opened by turning the armed hub.
The simplicity of this look is unsurpassed.
Its locking mechanism consists of the'latch bolt, the tumbler, the armed hub, a single spring, and the key, and the latch-bolt. The tumbler, and the armed hub can be cast ready to be inserted in their places, so that very little labor is required to complete my lock.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the latch-bolt, having the stud b and recess g, with the two-armed tumbler O, constructed with recesses c 0, to
receive the stud b, and with lips e, for engaging with the arms of the hub D, and the spring E, arranged to act directly upon one of the tumbler-arms, so as to throw out the bolt and hold-the tumbler in position, substantially as shown and described.
