Description

No. 692,047. {Patented Jan. 28,1902.

(No Model.)
INVENTOR UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ENosA. BRONSONHOF NEWBURGH, NEWYORK.
SPECIFICATION forming atter Letters PatentNo 692,047, dated January as, 1902.
a Application filed June 14.. isonsesti No. 64,483. (NomodeL) To aZZ whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, ENOsA. BRONSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newburgh, in the county of Orange and. State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners, of which the following is aspecification.
This invention relates to the class of fasteners or looks for windows wherein the two members of the fastener are mounted, respectively, on the meeting-rails of the upper and lower sashes and which look automatic ally when the window is closed.
The invention will be hereinafter more minutely described, and its novel features carefully defined in the claim.
In the accompanyingdrawings, which ill ustrate the invention, Figure 1 is a sectional view of the sashes of a partly-open window, showing the two membersof the fastener in side elevation. Fig. 2 is-a front view of the member on the lower sash. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the fastener, showing the two members locked, the plane of the section being indicated by line 00 in Fig. 2. Fig. at is a plan view. Fig. 5 illustrates two slightlymodified forms or shapes of the keeper.
X represents the upper or meeting rail of the lower sash, and Y the lower or meeting rail of the upper sash. On the upper surface of the rail X is mounted the memberA of the fastener, and on the upper surface of the rail Y is mounted the member B of the fastener.
" This latter is merely a metal wedge provided with securing-flanges and having in one of its inclined faces a bolt-socket b.
The member A has a head a of an inverted- V'shape, the recess 0r keeper in which is made to fit down snugly over the V-shaped orwedgelike member B when the window is closed, as seenin Fig. 3. In the memberA is mounted a spring-bolt a, the tip of which is adapted to wipe into the bolt-socket b when the wim dow is closed. This bolt has a head or button a whereby the bolt can be manipulated or withdrawn when the sashes are to be unlocked for opening the window.
' In order that the memberA may be drawn back, so as as to beinoperative, as when the window is to be washed or'for other reasons, the said member is, by preference, mounted .slidably in dovetail guides in a base A, se-
cured tothe rail X. In Fig. 4; the member A is represented as thus retracted or drawn back. In its two positions the memberA may be secured in the base by means of a set-screw a The point of the screw enters one of two recesses in the side of the member A.
The V form of the member B and of the head a. of the memberA is preferred; but this special shape or form is not absolutely essential. Fig. 5 illustratestwo other forms which may be used as well. The purpose is to provide a keeper in the head a to take overthe member B at front and back and a latch or bolt to lock the parts together.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- In a sash-fasteneror lock, the combination with the member to be mounted on the meeting-rail of the upper sash and provided with an inclined face and a bolt-socket therein, of the member to be secured to the meeting-rail of the lower sash, said member having a keeper to take over the other member front and back and provided with a spring-bolt to engage the socket in the latter, a base upon which the bolt-carrying member is slidably mounted, and a set-screw driven through the side of said base and adapted to secure said sliding member in either of its two positions, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name, this 11th day of June, 1901, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ENOS A. BRONSON.
