ISAIAH S. RICH, OF YONKERS, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO OTISBROTHERS & (30., OF SAME PLACE.
SASH-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,695, dated June 7, 1881.
Application filed April 4, 1881. (Model) To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ISAIAH S. RICH, of the city of Yonkers, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Window-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of lockin g devices constructed for application to windowsashes for the purpose of preventing the latter from being moved by parties outside the window; and myinvention consists of a device constructed, as fully described hereinafter, so as to lock the sashes positively to each other and to the window-frame, and'also so as to lock the lower sash to the window-frame and permit a limited movement of theupper sash.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of sufficient of two window-sashes to illustrate myimproved fastener in connection therewith. Fig.2 is a transverse section through the fastening device, upper sash, and frame. Fig. 3 is a detached section on the line 1 2, Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a vertical section.
A represents a case suitably constructed for attachment to the lower sash, B, of a window, and adapted to receive a straight sliding bolt, D, and a curved bolt, E, which has at the inner end a lug, a, entering a recess, 1), in the bolt D, the parts being so constructed and arranged that when the bolt D is thrown forward its end ,will be projected beyond the side edge of the sash B into a recess, :0, in the frame F, and the bolt E will be projected beyond the back edge of the sash into a slot, y, of the upper. sash, O. The slot yis partiallycovered by a slotted plate, G, the lower end of the slot being enlarged to permit the passage of the end ofthe bolt E, which has a lateral lip, e, and to form a shoulder, t.
When the parts arein the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the bolt D locks the lower sash to the frame F and the bolt E locks the upper sash to the lower one, so that there can be no movement of either sash.
It will be seen that a blade inserted between the two sashes against the bolt E will have no tendency to retract the latter, and that even should such blade be worked so as to gradually carry back the boltE the lip c, by its contact with the blade, would soon prevent further movement.
By retracting the bolt D so as to bring the bolt E to the position shown in Fig. 3 and in dotted lines, Fig. 2, the head of the bolt E is brought into a shallower portion, s, of the slot 3 and the upper sash, O, can be lowered to an extent corresponding to the length of the slot in the plate G, a portion of the bolt D still projecting into the holex and lockin g the lower sash.
While the lowering of the upper sash will permit, to a certain extent, the locking appliances to be reached from outside the window, it will be impossible to unlock either sash, as the lip e occupies a position behind a portion of the plate G, as shown in Fig. 3, and prevents the boltE from being retracted. When the upper sash is raised to its full extent the widest portion of the slot in the plate G is brought opposite the lip e, which may then pass through the same as the bolt D is drawn back, when both sashes will be unlocked.
To prevent the bolt E from being forced back by boring from the outside of the sash O, the plate G is provided with a guard, f, which prevents the entrance of a boring-tool into the slot 3 from the outside.
I do not limit myself to the precise construction and connection shown of the two bolts, as they may be differently constructed and operated. For instance, they may be arranged at right angles and connected by a bell-crank lever or links, or otherwise, so that the movement of one will insure a corresponding movement of the other; but I prefer the construction shown, because of its strength, simplicity, and cheapness.
I claim-- 1. The combination, in a sash-fastener, of a case containing a bolt, D, and a bolt, E, having an enlarged head connected to the bolt D, a plate, G, adapted for attachment to the upper sash, and having a slot wide enough at the lower end for the passage of the head of the bolt E, but contracted above, for the purpose set forth.
'2. The combination of the sash O, case car- I In testimony whereof I have signed myname rying connected bolts D E, one arranged to to this specification in the presence of two subbe projected to the rear and the other to the scribing witnesses.
