SASH FASTENER- No. 473,389. Patented Apr. 19, 1892.
5 News arms (20., wow-mm, vusmuarau n UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
GEROLT GIBSON, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
SASH-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 473,389, dated April 19, 1892.
Application filed July 27, 1891.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEROLT GIBSON, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Sash Locks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in fasteners for windows; and my said invention consists in certain details of 'construction'and arrangement of the parts, as and for the purposes as will be hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of the lower rail of a window, showing my look as applied in position thereon. Fig. 2 is a view of the rear of the main portion of the lock, the same being detached from the rail; and Fig.3 is a view of the locking-catch that forms the other portion of the lock. Fig. iis a vertical sectional elevation showing the lock in its locked position.
This lock consists of the two members A and B, hinged together, as shown at a, and socket C, which socket is cut in the outer edge of the window-sill. The member A is secured to the lower rail of the window by screws that pass through openings at the extremities of said member, as shown at a, and a projection, as at A, is provided to the part A, that rests beneath the lower edge of the window-rail, as shown in Fig. 4. This member A also has two openings formed through the front thereof, as at-A and A and the member B has a recess, as at B, corresponding to the opening A and a lower extension B that terminates in a hook end 13 adapted to enter the opening A of member A.
The letter D indicates a casing at the rear Serial No. 400,802. (No model.)
of the member A, having a spring d, that rests upon the back of the extension B of the memof the window to receive the casing D, and a hole is out in the front edge of the windowsill to receive the end of the catch 13 of the member B, whereby the locking of the lower sash to the sill is effected, and this by simply closing the window. The window is thus locked against opening except upon the release of the catch 13 from engagement with the socket U, and to effect such release ofthe latch in the act of raising the sash the finger is inserted through the opening A of the member A and the member B forced back, which releases the catch and allows the window to be raised, the spring dreacting the catch to its normal position.
This lock is designed principally for use in connection with the lock for the meeting-rails of a window, forming the subject-matter of a separate application for patent'filed simultaneously herewith.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The lock for the lower rail of a window, composed of a member A, having openings A and A casing D at the rear, and spring d, forming a part of said casing, seated within the lower rail of the lower sash, and member B, with offset Ct, hinged to the member A, recess B, and hook end B, adapted to pass through the hole A of the member A and engage a keeper in the outer edge of the sill, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEROLT GIBSON. Vitnesses:
LoUIs D. PICOT, O. H. P. GRUNDON.
