P. o. EWART. WINDOW SASH LOCK.
Patented Jan. 28, 1896.
@911131400523 l L/WW t7 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PI-IILO C. `EVART, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
WINDOW-SASH LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 553,518, dated January 28., 1896.
Application filed .Tune ll, 1895. Serial No. 552,380. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILO C. EWART, a citil zen of the United States of America, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of I-Iamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vindow-Sash Locks, of which the following is a specification.
The obj ect of my invention is to provide simple and efficient means for securing the sashes of a window to each other and for locking the sashes to the window-casing when closed or open, thus permitting proper ventilation without danger of entry from without and preventing rattling of the windows; and the invention consists in the device hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation, partially in section; Fig. 2, an end elevation, and Fig. 8 a detail of the securing-catch.
Mounted on the lower sash, A, of a Window is a bracket a, carrying a rod B, provided at its end adjacent to the upper sash with a screw b, preferably of larger diameter than the shank of the rod, and at the other end with a thumb-nut o. The opening through bracket a is of a size corresponding to the smaller partof the rod B, so as to allow the rod to slide back and forth, but not allow of its withdrawal from the bracket when in position. Mounted on rod B, between the bracket a and thumb-nut b', is a dog C, having a slot c, and adapted to slide radially upon the rod. A catch D, made in the form of a right angle and having faces d and d and an overhanging lip d2, is secured to the window-casing. The sliding dog C is adapted to take under lip cl2 and prevent raising the sash A.
The upper sash, E, is provided with a recess e, having its open end capped with abutton e', provided with an opening e2, adapted to receive the screw b. Cast on the inner edge of the opening e2 is a lug e3, adapted to follow the groove in the screw B.
To lock the window the upper sash is brought into a position such that the recess e and opening e2 are in line with the rod B, the screw is introduced into the opening e2, the groove of the screw takes over the lug e3, and the sashes are thereby drawn together. The sliding dog C is slipped under lip cl2, and as the sashes are drawn together bythe action of the screw the inner end of the thumb-nut b impinges on the dog C, and clamps it against the bracket a and the face cZof the catch D. The sashes are thus secured together and secured to the casing in a very simple manner. The impinging faces of the dog C and thumb-nut h' are preferably serrated, so that a firm grasp is obtained between them.
To unfasten the window the screw is turned` in the reverse direction until the screw is disengaged from the upper sash, the dog C is slipped out from under the lip d2, and the sashes are released from each other and from the casing.
A series of buttons, similar to e, may be arranged on the upper sash so as to enable it to be locked in any required position. The upper sash may be lowered, locked to the lower sash, and the lower sash locked to the window-casing,l so as to allow perfect ventilation of a room without danger of having any one enter by raising the lower sash.
I claim as my invention- The combination in awindow sash lock of a bracket carrying a rod provided with a screw end adapted to take through and engage with a button in the upper sash and into an aperture therein, with a sliding dog adapted to slide relatively to the bracket and enter a catch secured to the window casing, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
PHILO C. EWART.
