DOOR LATCH.

JOHN H. MGCANN, OF BANGOR, MAINE.
DO OR-LATC'I-I.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JoHN H. MCCANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bangor, in the county of Penobscot and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Latches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to door locks and latches, and has for its object the provision of'a simple and inexpensive device whereby the occupant of a room may effectually lock the door against opening from the outside.
A secondary object of the invention is to provide a device for the stated purpose which will be composed of very few parts and may be readily applied to looks already in place.
Other incidental objects of the invention will appear as the description of the same proceeds.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and consists in certain novel features which will be particularly pointed out in the claims following the detailed description.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a door having my improved device applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a View showing the device applied to a door and in position to prevent opening of the door, the working parts being shown in horizontal section; and Fig. 8 is a detail perspective view showing the several parts of the device disassembled but in their proper relative positions.
In the drawings, 1 indicates a swinging door of the usual form, and 2 is the door frame provided with a keeper or recess adapted to be engaged by the latch 3 slidably mounted in the door.
In carrying out my invention, I form in the inner face of the latch, near the outer end of the same, a vertical groove 4, and upon the inner side of the door immediately adjacent the edge of the same, I secure a housing or bracket 5 which may be secured to the door by screws or other fastenings 6, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. This bracket presents a central angular portion adapted to house a locking plate 7 which has a lip 8 at one end projecting from the housing and adapted to engage the groove 4, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. This locking plate is further provided within the housing with an enlarged body 9 internally threaded, as

5 shown at 10, so as to receive the threaded extremity of a screw 11 which is swiveled within the outer wall of the bracket 5 and equipped with a milled head 12 whereby it may be easily manipulated.
It is thought the use of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. I
The door is closed in the usual manner, and the latch springs into engagement with the door frame. The lip 8 on the locking plate enters between the door and the door frame, there usually being a space between the edge of the door suflicient to admit the lip which may easily have the requisite strength without being very thick. If, however, the door and the door frame are very closely fitted, a groove or recess may be formed in either the door or the frame in order to acccommodate the lip. After the door is closed, the screw 11 is rotated about its own axis and the threaded engagement of said screw with the nut or enlarged body 9 will cause the locking plate to ride toward the door and the lip 8 to enter the groove 4, as will be readily understood. Releasing movement of the latch will then be prevented inasmuch as the lip 8 entering the groove l and bearing against the edge of the door holds the latch positively stationary and in engagement with the door frame. In order to open the door, the locking plate will first be withdrawn from engagement with the latch by manipulation of the screw 11 and it is, therefore, obvious that the door cannot be opened from the outside.
The device is obviously simple and inexpensive and may be easily applied to any door already in position. In appplying the device to an old door, a groove is filed in the inner face of the latch immmediately adj acent the edge of the door, as will be readily understood, after which the bracket and locking plate are secured to the door. The bracket should be of such dimensions that it will engage the edges of the locking plate so that said plate may slide in the housing to or from the door but will be prevented from having any turning movement so that it cannot rotate with the screw but will be caused to ride along the screw when the screw is rotated. The screw may be swiveled in any desired manner in the outer wall of and the door frame the bracket so that it cannot move longitudinally through the wall after having been assembled therewith.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. The combination with a door, and a latch mounted therein and provided with a vertical groove in its inner face, of a looking plate mounted upon the inner side of the door for bodily sliding movement but held against pivotal movement and provided with a lip projecting across the edge of the door to'engage said groove in the latch, and means mounted on the door for movingsaid locking plate into and out "of engagement withthe latch. V
2. The combination with a door, and a latch mounted therein, of a bracket secured upon the inner face of the door, a locking plate fitted in said bracket for bodily sliding movement 'and 'having a lip extendingfrom the bracket and around the edge of the door to engage the latch, and 'means carried by the bracket to move the locking platebodily to and from the door and thereby carry the lip into and out 'of'e'ngagement with the latch.
3.The combination with'a dooryand a latchfmou'nted therein, of'a bracket secured upon the inner face of the door and having an angular hollow body, a locking plate slidably fitted in'said angular hollow bodyand held against rotation thereby and adapted to'engage the latch, and an adjusting'screw mounted in' the outer'wall -of said body and having a threaded engagement with the said locking plate.
l. The combination with a door, and a Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents sliding latch mounted therein, of a bracket secured on the inner face of the door adjacent the free edge of the same and having parallel sides and an open end, a locking plate mounted on said bracket for free bodily sliding movement between the sides thereof and held against pivotal movement by said sides, a lip projecting from said look ing plate through the open end of the bracket and across the edge of the door to engage the latch, and means mounted on the bracket and engaging the locking plate to slide the samebodily toward and from the door.
5. The combination with a door, and a sliding'latch mounted therein, of a bracket secured on the inner face of the door adjacent the "free edge of the same and having an open end, the latch being provided in its inner face with a vertical groove lyingadjacentthe free edge of the door and outwardly beyond the same when the latch is projectecba locking plate mounted inthe bracket for free bodily sliding movement and heldag-ainst pivotal movement by said bracket, a lip pro ect1ng from'saidlo'cking plate across the free edge of the door'to engage'thegroove in thelatch, and a screw swiveled'in the bracketand having a threaded engagement with the locking platewhereby to move the same bodily towardand from the doorand thereby carry the said lip into or'olrlit of'engagement with the groove in the late In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
