710,189, dated September 30, 1902.

To all whom, it ntmy concern.-
Be it known that I, DUNCAN FORBES, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex. and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Locks; and Ido hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The objects of this invention are to provide a more secure and perfect fastener or lock for window-sashes, one adapted to more perfectly resist or prevent the opening of the window both from the inside and from the outside, to secure a device which will be of neat and ornamental appearance on the window and not detract from its finish, and to secure other advantages and results, some of which may be referred to hereinafter in connection with the description of the working arts.
The invention consists in the improved sashlock and in the arrangements and combinations of parts of the same, all substantially as will be hereinafter set forth and finally embraced in the clauses of the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the several figures, Figure l is an elevation of the device arranged in connection with the upper and lower sashes of a window. Fig. 2 is a section of the same, taken at line a; of Fig. 1 and showing the parts in their locked relation. Fig. 3 is a similar section showing the parts unlocked. Fig. 4 is a plan of the same. Fig. 5 is a plan showing the parts with the outer casing removed. Fig. 6 is a section of Fig. 5, taken at line y. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the upper-sash member of the ole-- Fig. 8 shows a perspective view and Fig. 9 is a perspective view of the lower-sash member, from which the locking-bolt has been withdrawn. In said drawings, a indicates a portion of the lower sash and b a portion of the upper sash, and upon the meeting-rails of said sashes are arranged, respectively, the upper-sash member 0 of the lock and the lower-sash member d.
The upper-sash member 0 comprises a single casting, (shown more clearly in Figs. 5 and 7,) having a downwardly-p rojecting face-plate c, which is perforated, and thus adapted to be secured against the inner face of the rail 1), as shown in Fig. 2. The said casting is also provided with a pair of ears c lying in a plane at right angles to the plane of the face-plate c, which ears extend outward and form a recess 0 between for a purpose hereinafter referred to. Between the said ears 0 is formed a loop 0 adapted to receive the locking-bolt c. The ears 0 are perforated to receive screws her 0 is fastened to the rail, the screws being arranged at right angles to the screw through the plate 0, and thus the upper-sash member of the lock is firmly fastened in place and cannot easily be withdrawn, even when the outer case is not in place.
The lower-sash member consists of a single casting and a bolt e, adapted to slide therein, the said casting being shown more clearly in Fig. 9, where d is the downwardly-extending ear or plate, adapted to lie on the outer face of the meeeting-rail of the lower sash and be secured thereto. d is the body-plateof said casting, adapted to lie upon the top of the said meeting-rail and be screwed thereto from the top. The said body-plate (Z is grooved, as at 61 Fig. 9, and provided with a loop (1", and in the groove and loop the bolte slides to and from the upper-sash member 0. At the inner corners on the under side of the plate d are formed recesses d adapted to re ceive certain lugs formed on the outer casting, as hereinafter described. At one side of the groove d is formed a post d and a keyway 61 the post being adapted to enter the barrel of the key and the keyway (1 serving to receive the hit of the key. The'lock-bolt e is formed to nicely fit the groove 01 and loop cl of the casting d. Said bolt at one side is provided with recesses f, Figs. 8 and 11, adapted to receive the bit of the key when the latter is turned on the post (1. Fig. 8, by which the bolt is prevented from being withdrawn from its casing or member. At its projecting end the said bolt is recessed, as at 6 to receive a stay projection of the outer casing, as will be hereinafter described.
The parts are so arranged as that by applying the key g to the post OZ and turning the same the lock-bolt e is moved forward into the loop 0 and the sashes are thus locked. A second turn of the key 9 when the outer. casing h is in position serves to throw the bolt into engagement with the said outer casing it to lock the same in place. When unlocked, theouter casing is detachable from the sash member 0 cl, and thus it may be removed from the sashes for the purposes of polishing or otherwise. The said outer casing it comprises a single box-like piece of metal, preferably bronze or brass, as shown in Fig. 10, and provided at its inner side near the lower edges with inner projections or lugs 71. h The projections h are arranged at the corners of the box or case and are adapted to slide into the recesses d of the lowersash member, while the lug or projection 71. is adapted to lit between the ears 0 c of the upper-sash member. The top of the box or casing is suitably provided with a keyhole. h Fig. 4, adapted to permit the passage of the key through said case onto the post (Z The casing 71. is arranged first on the member d when the upper sash is a little low, as in Fig. 3, the said casing then being thrust outwardly and the lugs h entering the recesses d Afterward the upper sash is raised, and the lug 72 enters between the cars 0 The bolt e is then pushed outward by the key and asses over the rojection 71, so that the cas- P P ing cannot be removed, the said casing thus preventing any outside manipulation whateveror manipulation from theinside except by those in control of the key, thus serving to secure the sashes against either outside or inside manipulation and preventing carelessness of servants within the house in leaving, for example, the windows open when the mistress of the house is absent, as will be understood.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is l. The combination with the upper and lower sash members and a bolt for fastening the said parts together, of a casing adapted to be secured over the said members, and locked thereto substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with the upper and lower sash members, one of the said members having a keyway or means for controlling the movements of the key and a lock-bolt having recesses to receive the bit of the key, said lock-bolt being adapted to move from one member into locking relation with the other member and thence into locking relation with the casing, of said casing adapted to be secured by said lock-bolt over said lock members, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination with the sash members, and a lock-bolt slidable on one member into locking engagement with the other, of a casing adapted to inclose both of said members and to be locked by said bolt and key for operating the bolt and looking all said parts together, substantially as set forth.
4:. The combination with the sash members having loops and Ways fora locking-bolt, and a casing of said locking-bolt having separate recesses f, f, to receive the bit of the key and a key for moving said bolt from the loop on one member into the loop of the other,
the said bit when first rotating with the keybeing adapted to enter one recess and throw the bolt to lock the sash members together and, on the second turning, to enter the next recess in order and throw the bolt intolooking engagement with the casing, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination with the sash members having loops and slideways and one of said members having a keyway, a bolt arranged and adapted to be moved on said slideways and in said loops to lock said members together and a casing inclosing said members and having projections to engage one of said members and said bolt and be locked upon said members substantially as set forth.
