SAMUEL S. ZELLEY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
WINDOW FASTE NER AND LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 682,013, dated September 3, 1901.
Application filed March 20,1901. Serial No. 51,969. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL S. ZELLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Window Fasteners and Locks, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention relates to an improvement in fasteners and locking devices for windows; and it consists of a spring-arm having a shoulder thereon and means on the window-frame for engagement with said shoulder.
It further consists of novel details of construction, all as will be hereinafter set forth.
Figures 1 and 2 represent side elevations of a portion of a window sash and frame in dif; ferent positions, showing a window-fastener embodying my invention attached thereto. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of a window-fastener embodying my invention in detached position.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a window-frame having the usual Window-sash B. Attached to said sash is a spring-arm 0, having a shoulder D, with a portion K hearing against the said arm 0 and provided with the inclined face E, it being seen in the present instance that the said face E and shoulder D are formed by the proper bending of the metal composing the arm 0 and that the latter is twisted, as at F, in order to properly present the shoulder D to engage with the catch, which consists of a shoulder G, above which is the inclined face II, said catch being secured to a proper place on the windowframe by the screws J or other suitable means. In the present instance I have shown the shoulder G and face H formed of a single piece of material and I have shown the catches at different heights on the frame; but of course this may be varied as well as the number thereof.
The operation is as follows: The parts being in the position seen in Fig. 1, the windowsash is locked, since the shoulders I) and G are in engagement. If now it is desired to raise the window, the spring-arm O is forced over until the shoulders are disengaged, as seen in dotted lines, Fig. 1, when the window can be raised until the shoulder D engages with the metal catch and the window will be locked at that position. When it is desired to shut the Window, it will be seen that the inclined faces E and H contact and the springarm is forced out, the parts sliding upon each other, and thus permit of closing without manipulation of the fasteners.
It will be evident that various changes may be made by those skilled in this art which will come within the scope of my invention, and I do not therefore desire to be limited in every instance to the exact construction herein shown and described. 7
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a fastener for windows, a spring-arm and twist therein, an inclined face thereon, a shoulder formed thereby, having a portion thereof bearing against said arm, and a catch having a shoulder thereon, which is adapted to be engaged by said first-mentioned shoulder and an inclined face, on which said firstmentioned face is adapted to ride.
SAMUEL S. ZELLEY.
