WINDOW-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 14, 1909.
Application filed March 16, 1909. Serial No. 483,850.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHAN B. DENISON, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island,ha-ve I invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVindow-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a device adapted to be secured upon the inner lower window sash to automatically act to lock the outer upper window-sash, in order that both sashes may be held in either a closed position or in a partial opened position, as may be desired; and the object of my invention is to provide a device to insure against movement of the sashes from the outside of an apartment or building.
My invention consists of the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, as hereinafter described and specifically set forth in the claim.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure 1 represents a partial view of the inner side portions of two window-sashes, as in closed position, and illustrating the relative position of my device as locked against movement of either sash. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section of both windowsashes, taken in line 0:.a1. of Fig. 1, showing the parts embodying my invention. Fig. 3 is a partial end view of both sashes, showing my device locked to the upper sash, as after the lower sash has been lifted to provide a partial opening in the window, and, Figs. 4, 5, 6 and 7 represent perspective views of the several parts to form. my improved window-lock.
Like reference characters indicate parts.
In the drawings I have shown so much of the window-sashes to illustrate the manner of applying my device thereto and wherein, A, designates the inner lower sash and, B, the outer upper sash.
My improved window-lock comprises a latch a, a base-plate Z), a spring 0, and a socket-member (Z.
The latch-member a is of stiff wire bent in the form of an elongated loop having straight extensions a ,a from its bent over portion a and which extensions have their free end portions projecting toward each other to act as trunnions a a for said member.
The base-member b is a thin metallic strip like bent upon itself so as to provide a journal bearing, as 6 to receive the trunnions a? of the latch a, and beyond the journal bear ng 12 the respective upper and lower adjommg portions b", b are perforated so as to provide a screw-opening therethrough, as at a point 6 and the lower portion 6 which is a trifle longer than the upper portion 6 terminates with a downwardly bent spur 12 This base-member b is provided with a shoulder formed at each end and above its pivot center 5 as at points b I), to limit the outer swing-movement of the latch a.
My improved device is designed to be mounted on the top surface A of the lower sash A and near one end thereof, and the spur b of the base-plate b driven to embed in the frame of said sash, at a point close to the rear of the vertical portion of the upper sash-frame B, and said plate 5 secured by a screw 6 which passes through the opening b and into said sash A, in the manner shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The member 0 is a thin flat spring having a curved upper portion 0 to contact upon the extensions of the latch-member a, and the other portion 0 of said spring being adapted to interpose between the bottom of the base-member b and the top surface of the sash A, and which latter portion of said spring is forked, as at 0 to receive the screw therebetween and which screw serves to secure said member 0 firmly in place. This spring-member 0 is adapted to hold the latch-member a in a locked position upon the outer or upper sash B.
The member d is struck up from thin metal so as to leave a circular shallow aperture which forms a socket (Z to receive the bent over free portion a of the latch-member a. Said member d has an annular flange d surrounding its aperture and in the bottom of the latter is provided a screw-opening d The vertical frameportion of the upper sash B is recessed at a point above and in a plane with the latch-member a, to receive the socket-member d, which, when mounted within the recess has its flange d flush with the outer surface of said sash B, and this socket-member is secured in place by a screw d which passes through the opening d of said member and into the said sash. This socket- 1 member d is mounted at such a point within l the sash B as will permit the spring-pressed latch a to engage its socket d after both sashes of the window are closed,- when the devicewill then secure the sashes in a locked condition, in the manner shown in Figs. 1
and 2. The upper sash B is also provided with an extra socket-member d which is po-" sitioneds'ay three inches above its lower socket-member, in order that the latch may be swung from itslocked position shown in Fig. 2, to the dotted position shown in said figure, and thereby permit the lower sash A to be; lifted and cause thelatch to engage the socket of this upper member cl, and thus hold in the locked position the parts shown v in'Fig. 3, when a ventilating opening is then provided in the window, as by-height e in Fig. l, and equal to the distance between the sockets to lock both sashes. When desired to have the upper sash B open to this said amount 'of three inches, the lower sash is closed and the latch swung to engage in the top socket of said upper sash, as inthe position of parts shown in Fig. 3.
of automaticallylocking either sash of a window 1n a closed position or 1n-a par-Q .tially openedposition, as the case may require, and at'the same time a device that is simple, durablefand inexpensiveito manui facture.
What I claim and desire to secure by Let ters- Patent, is 7 The herein-described device, consisting of the latch-member a bent in the form lof an elongated loop whose ends extend toward each other to act as trunnions; as a in the base-plate b bent upon itselfso asto" provide a journal bearingb i to receive the V trunnion portions of said latch-memben said plate having a spur at one endthereof and also shoulders I), b 'above its journal bearing tolimit the extent of movement of said latch member; the spring-memberichaving a curved upper portion 0 to contact upon said latch-member and the other portion'of said spring forked, as at 0 and the socketmember (Z to receive the free end portion of said latch-member, substantially as shown and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I niy'signature i in presence of two witnesses. V V
