SLIDING-DOOR EASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 19,1913.
Application filed September 13, 1912'. Serial No. 720,227.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL E. WVILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sliding-Door Fastoners, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to door fasteners, and more particularly to the class of sliding door fasteners.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a latch of this character wherein the same may be readily unlocked on the pulling upon the operating lever therefor when in the act of sliding the door to opened or closed position, thereby avoiding the necessity of first unlocking the door and the subsequent sliding of the same to open or closed position.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a latch which is of the emergency type so that the door on which the latch is mounted may be readily freed and moved to open or closed position. The door when locked in either open or closed position will be securely fastened.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a door latch in which the same may be readily manipulated without requiring separate operation for the unlocking and moving of the door to open position.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a door latch of this character which is simple in construction, reliable and eflicient in its operation, and inexpensive in manufacture.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of part-s as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a door frame and door with the latch mounted thereon constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal transverse sectional View through the frame and door directly above the latch. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 5 designates a portion of a door frame and 6 a portion of a sliding door, the same being mounted for sliding movement at the inner side of the frame, the vertical stiles of the door frame 5 being provided with the usual keeper plates 7, whereby the door 6 may be locked in opened or closed position by means of the latch hereinafter more fully described.
Suitably fixed to the outer face of the door near one vertical edge thereof is a bracket 8 formed with an outwardly and upwardly bent bearing ear 9 between which and the outer face of the door is arranged an L- shaped latch operating lever 10, the long arm of which is formed with an outwardly and upwardly bent handle 11, while its short arm is formed with inwardly and outwardly bent lugs or lips 12 and 13 for operating latch members presently described.
The lever 10 is connected to the bearing 9 by means of a pivot 14, the same carrying swinging latch members 15 and 16 respectively, the latter being loosely connected at its inner end to the said pivot 14, while the member 15 is loosely connected intermediate its ends to the said pivot 14, and lies beneath the lug or lip 12, while the member 16 is disposed above and rests upon the lug or lip 13, so that when pulling upon the handle 11 of the lever 10 in one direction the latch member 15 will be raised for disengagement with the keeper plates 7, thereby unlatching the door to permit it to he slid to open position. hen the door swings to open position the latch member 16 will automatically engage the keeper plate 7 at the other side of the door frame thereby locking the door open. Now on swinging the lever 10 in the other direction the latch member 16 will disengage from the said keeper 7, thus permitting the door to be closed. The lever 10 shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 is straddled by means of a guide cleat 24, the cleats being designed to limit the swinging movement of the levers and latch members.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that the construction and operation of the invention will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended GX-- planation has been omitted.
hat is claimed is A latch comprising a bracket adapted to be secured to a door and having an offset ear, duplex latching means and the other arm duplex latching means pivotally mounted forming a handle. 10 upon the ear, and a lever having two arms, In testimony whereof I aflix my signature one at right angles to the other swingingly in presence of two Witnesses.
