GRAIN-GAB DOOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. '7, 1909.
Application filed January 13, 1909. Serial No. 472,082.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVINFIELD S. DRIS- KELL, a citizen of the United States, residi ing at Gretna, in the county of Sarpy and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grain- Gar Doors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in grain car doors, and refers particularly to improvements in that character of doors for which application was filed by me September 21, 1908, #454,007 and the improvement in this case resides particularly in the manner of constructing the lower portion of the door and in providing in said lower section a supplemental or auxiliary door.
The object of the invention is to improve the construction of the door and enhance its efficiency, durability and general utility.
Vith these objects in view, my invention consists mainly in the provision of a smaller or auxiliary door mounted in the lower section of the main door and in certain novel details of construction and combination of parts for service, substantially as disclosed herein.
Figure 1 represents a side view of a car provided with my door. Fig. 2 represents a vertical transverse sectional view. Fig. 3 represents an elevation of the lower por tion of the door, and Figs. 4L, 5, 6, and 7, represent detailed views on an enlarged scale.
teferring by letter to the drawings, in which similar letters designate corresponding parts in the several views, the letter A designates the car body provided with door opening B and suitable guides or ways C in which is adapted to move the guiding pins or studs D carried by the door.
The door is composed of a series of sections F and the lower section is made up of a series of narrow strips G and said lower section is provided with an opening in which is engaged the smaller door K, said door K consisting of a. series of sections connected together by tongue and groove joints L. Connected by means of the hinge M to the lower section of the smaller door, is a plate or strip N which when the smaller door is closed, engages the plate or keeper C and retains thehinge plate in proper position and holds the smaller door closed. To said hinge plate is connected the lower end of the lever or handle P, a pivoted latch Q being provided to hold the lever in look ing position. Assuming the main door to be closed and if desired to open the smaller or supplemental door, it is simply necessary to turn the catch and release the handle which permitsthe hinge plate to swing inward by moving the handle outward and allows the opening of the smaller door .as shown most clearly in Fig. 5 and the position of the smaller door when the lever and hinge plate are locked is shown in Fig. l.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, it will be seen that I provide in addition to the regular sliding door, a supplemental or smaller door, which will permit access to the car and avoid the necessity of opening the larger door and which will prove eflicient and desirable under certain conditions.
I claim:
In a grain car door, the combination with a car body having a door opening, of a door fitted to said opening and having an opening in its lower portion with an up turned keeper atits lower end, a supplemental door fitted to said opening and hinged at its upper edge to the main door, a plate hinged at its lower end to the lower edge of the supplemental door and adapted to engage said keeper and retain the hinged plate in position, a lever connected with said hinged plate, and means engaging the free end of the lever to lock the parts in closed position, said lever extending in a direction opposite to that of the hinges of the supplemental door.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
WVPIFIELD S. DRISKELL.
Witnesses J. GEO. YOUNG, J. -W. JMARTIN.
