GRAIN-CAR DOOR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 722,578, dated March 10, 1903.

To all whom it mag concern.-

Be it known that I, JOSEPH L. HAMEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grafton, in the county of Walsh and State of North Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Grain-Oar Doors, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a grain-car door;

struction of the invention, will be specifically described hereinafter, and the novel features are clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section through a car, showing my invention applied. Fig. 2 isacross-section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.

Referring now to the drawings by numerals of reference, 1 designates a car-body provided with suitable openings 2 and 3 in the sides thereof. Alon g the vertical edges of the openings 2 and 3 are wedge-shaped battens 4 and 5, the inner surfaces of which converge from the bottom toward the top of the car until they terminate on a plane approximately parallel with the sides thereof. Adjacent these battens are arranged inverted-U-shaped staples 6 and 7, which form hinges for the pivoted doors 8, which are connected to the staples by means of projecting ears 9 and 10. These doors rest against the wedge-shaped battens when the opening'is closed, and inasmuch as the doors will be on an inclined acts as a gate to close the opening and is securely held in place by means of one or more eccentrically-pivoted latches 16, which are secured to the side of the car at a point adjacent the lower corners thereof and which are adapted to be automatically thrown in engagement therewith by a weighted handle 17. I prefer to employ-two of these latches, one at each corner; but a single latch may be u used, if desired.

It will thus be seen that I have provided a cheap, simple, and cfficient means for closing the openings in the side of the car and a closure which may be readily operated with a minimum liability of getting out of order.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a car-door closure, the combination with a car having an opening in one side thereof; of wedge-shaped battens secured to the longitudinal edges of said opening, a pivoted door adapted to ,be folded from the bottom of the car to rest against said battens on an inclined plane, and means for locking the door with relation to the battens.

2. In a car-door closure, the combination with a car having an opening in the side thereof; of battens secured to the longitudinal edges of said opening, the inner surfaces of which converge from the bottom toward the top of the car, a pivoted door secured to the bottom of the car and adapted to rest against the said battens, a sliding gate suspended above the door and adapted to overlap the same, and fastening devices adapted to engage the gate whereby the door and gate will be held in a locked position.

3. In a car-door closure, the combination with a car having an opening in the side thereof; of battens secured to the inner side ofthe car and arranged adjacent to the vertical edges of the opening, a pivoted door secured to the car and adapted to rest against said battens, a sliding gate suspended above the door and adapted to overlap the upper edge thereof and gravity-actuated fastening devices adapted to engage the gate whereby the door and gate will be securely locked together to close the opening.
