RUDOLF R. N. HANSEN AND ALFRED BOGGILD, OF NORFOLK DOWNS, MASSACHUSETTS.-
LOCK FOR WINDOW-SASHES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 16, 1916.
Application filed August 6, 1913. Serial No. 783,402.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, RUDOLF R. N. HAN- SEN and ALFRED BOGGILD, citizens of the United States, residing at Norfolk Downs, in the county of Norfolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks for Window- Sashes; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to latches for window sashes.
The object of this invention is to provide a latch for window sashes which will lock the latter against movement.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a fragment of a window showing the improved latch applied and the window sash held partially elevated thereby; Fig. 2, a plan view of that shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a section on the line 1-4 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings A indicates a window frame and B and G the upper and lower window sashes respectively. Mounted upon a side member of the lower sash C is a plate 10 provided at its lower end with an outwardly directed portion 11. This outwardly directed portion 11 is provided at each end with an extension 12 which are bent downwardly and inwardly to form guideways for a sliding latch 13 which is adapted to engage the lower edge of a keeper plate 14: moimted on the adjacent side of the window frame A.
The latch 13 is normally held in projected position by means of a leaf spring 15 one end of which is anchored to the latch while the other end thereof engages the extension 12. The latch 13 bears at its inner edge against a plate 16 mounted on the sash C beneath the plate 10. Formed integral with the portion 11 at the outer edge thereof is an upstanding ear 17 and pivoted between this ear 17 and the body of the plate 10 is a lever 18. The end of the-lever 18 adjacent the sides of the frame A is provided with a cross arm 19 upon which is mounted a resilient bearing sleeve 20 preferably of rubber. The distance from the pivot of the lever 18 to the outer side of the sleeve 20 is slightly in excess of the distance from the pivot of said lever to the adjacent face of the adjacent side of the frame A so that when the lever 18 is rocked in one direction the sleeve 20 will engage the side of the frame A and force the sash C laterally to bind and lock the latter against movement as will be obvious.
What is claimed is A sash lock comprising a body portion adapted for attachment to a window sash, said body portion including a laterally extending lower end, spaced fingers formed on the outer edge of the laterally extending lower end and bent downwardly and inwardly to form guideways, a latch slidably mounted between said fingers and the laterally extending lower end for movement into engagement with a stop mounted upon the window frame to positively lock the sash against upward movement, and spring means constantly tending to hold said latch in position to engage a stop on the window frame.
In testimony whereof, we aflix our signatures, in the presence of two witnesses.
RUDOLF R. N. HANSEN. ALFRED BOGGILD.
