SASH-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 632,217, dated August 29, 1899.

To (LZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS l/V. GETOH- a portion of one side of a window and sash having my new fastener attached to both the I upper and lower sash. Fig. 2 is a full-sized view in section of a portion of the lower sash, showing the adaptation of my fastener thereto designed for holding the sash down. Fig. 3 is a like full-sized View showing the adaptation of the fastener for holding the upper sash up. Fig. 4 is a front view showing an escutcheon over the fastener through which the fastener may be held when desired to move the sash in the direction opposite to that which the fas- 2 5 tener holds them. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the fastener detached.
A represents the lower sash, and B the upper sash, of a Window.
C, Figs. 1, 2, and 3, represents the fastener, 0 which consists of a cam-shaped block which may be made of any suitable material, preferably of porcelain, to avoid rust, splitting, or swelling by dampness. D is a small lug on the corner or angle of the block. This 3 5 block comprises the new and essential feature of my invention.
The manner of applying and using this simple fastener is as follows: A small chamber E is cut in the edge of each sash about mid- 0 way of their length, sufficiently deep to allow the block to rest therein. In the lower sash the block C is placed in position, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2, with the lug D reaching into a small recess d in the lower corner of the cham- 5 her E, the corner of the.block on each side of the lug bearing against the back of the chamber, and the other and rounded end of the block bears against the window-frame F. It will thus be seen that the sash cannot be raised,because the movement to raise it causes the block to press between the bearings (Z and theirame F and bind the sash tightly and prevent its being raised. If it is desired to raise the sash, the block may be held from catching by pressing the end of the finger against it through the hole in the escutcheon. The sash may be easily lowered, however, without the block catching, for it simply slides down the frame without binding.
In the upper sash the position of the block is reversed, as seen at C in Figs. 1 and 3. I11 this case the lug D reaches into the small recess cl in the upper back corner of the chamber E, and in order to have the rounded end of the block C bear against the window frame a spring S is placed in a cavity in the lower side of the chamber E, upon which the block sets.

This simple device is an efiectual check against lowering the upper sash or raising the lower sash from the outside of the window, so that the upper sash may be lowered a little distance for ventilation without the liability of its being lowered any farther from the outside.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. In a sash-holder, the combination of a recess in a sash, a segment shaped block loosely placed therein, the point of said block being adapted to engage one wall of said recess, and the rounded surface of said block being adapted to bear against the windowframe at a point other than in a line perpendicular to the window frame through the point of said cam-block, substantially as described.
2. The herein-described sash-lock consisting of cam-block C having a lug D on its angle, a recess E in the edge of the sash, said cam-block occupying said recess with the lug D entering a cavity in a corner of the recess, and the round surface of the block bearing against the window-frame F, and adapted for binding the sash in the manner described and for the purpose specified.
