W zi fornqy STATES PATENT F CHARLES I-IIATT AND RESCUE B. PAGE, 013 LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
SASH-I-IOLDER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES HIATT and Rescue B. PAGE, both citizens of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sash-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The objects of our invention are to provide a handy, reliable and inexpensive means to hold the window-sash in any desired position in the window-frame, and to dispense with the sash weight, pulleys and cords used in the ordinary construction, and our invention is particularly adapted for use in inexpensively constructed buildings, such as portable houses, bungalows and the like where the walls are constructed of a single thickness of material.
We accomplish these objects by means of the device described herein and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1-is a front elevation of a window-sash in place in a window-frame with our improvement placed therein, the casing of the window-frame being broken away to show our improved sash holder in place in the window-frame. Fig. 2-is a section taken on line 22 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction indicated by the arrow head thereon. Fig. 3is a front elevation of a fragment of a window-frame and sash showing the knob projecting from the sash holder.
In the drawings, 1 represents the window-frame in which the upper sash 2 is fixed, the lower sash being slidably mounted in the frame. Disposed to the right of the lower sash and having a limited vertical movement therein, is the sash holder 4. This sash holder is wedge-shaped in general outline, the butt of the same being on top and the arrow point thereof at the bottom. The window-frame is provided with an inclined bearing face 5 adapted to contact with and engage one side of the wedge-shaped holder, and when the holder is in its depressed osition it will contact one side with the win owsash which is inclined to the vertical as clearly shown in Fig. 1, and the other side with the inclined frame and hold the sash Specification of Letters Patent.

against any movement in the frame. The sash holder is kept in its depressed or normal position by its weight and it may be weighted for that purpose and will while depressed always hold the sash tightly in the frame. e have shown a coiled spring 6, its lower end resting upon the upper end of the sash holder and its upper end in place and resting against the window-frame. This is a mere modification which will seldom if ever be required. In Fig. l the lower sash is shown partly raised. and held tightly in this position by the downward impulse of the sash holder caused by its own weight. Now when it is desired to move the sash up or down the knob 7 which projects outwardly from the sash holder (the-shank 8 of which projects through the longitudinal slot 9 in the windowframe)' is raised up, this will carry the sash holder upwardly out of its locked eugagement between the sash and the frame and permit the movement of the sash up or down as desired. Upon releasing the knob the wedge-shaped sash stopper will immediately drop and lock the sash and frame together and prevent any further movement of the sash.
Having described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A sash-holder, comprising a wedge-shaped member, said member being disposed between one of the vertical edges of the sash and its guideway formed in the window frame, both the vertical edge of the sash and its guideway being inclined in the same general direction but at different angles to each other, the wedge-shaped member being inclined on its vertical contacting edges to correspond with the inclines formed on the sash and its guideway.
In witness that we claim the foregoing we hereunto subscribed our names this 21st day of December, 1908.
