DOOR CHECK. APPLICATION FILED FEB. 26. 1916- latented Feb. 27,1917.
2 SHEETS-SHEET 2.
mz m/ w WITNESSES I I ATTORNEYS FRANK 1?. FAIRBANKS, F POINT PLEASANT, NEW JERSEY.
DOOR-CHECK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 26, 1916. Serial No. 80,675.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK P. FAIRBANKS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Point Pleasant, in the county of Ocean and State of New Jersey, have invented a- 7 new and Improved Door-Check, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to door checks, and an object thereof is to provide a simple, inexpensive and eflicient device whereby a door is positively prevented from. closing accidentally and thereby causing injury to a person having his fingers at the j amb. An-
other object of the invention is to provide a door check which .will prevent the closing of the door unless the door handle or knob is operated. A further object of the invention is to provide a doorcheck which will allow the door to move freely from the jamb without the operation of the handle.
With the above and other objects in view, the nature of which will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the inventionv consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as herein fully described, illustrated and claimed. In the accompanying drawings, forming part of the application, similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is an elevation of a door provided with an embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line 2-2,
Fig. 1;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a door catch for retaining the door in open position Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line 33, Fig. 4; i
Fig. 4 is an edge elevation of the door, certain parts thereof being broken away to show the details of construction; and
Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on line 55, Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, 10 is the door at the steps of a railway car in the upper edge of which a latch socket 11 is recessed. The latch 12 within the socket is connected by a rigid or flexible wire 13 to a slide 14 located in a recess 15 in the door about the knob spindle 16 of the door lock. The slide has a cut-out to receive a tumbler 17 mounted on the spindle 16 within the recess 15 and adapted to participate in the movement of spindle.- A spring 18 is provided within the socket 11 to force the latch 12 out of the socket and bring the slide 14 into operative relation with the tumbler 17 on the spindle 16. Preferably a guide 19 is provided for the slide within the recess 15. The face plate 20 of the lock normally covers the recess 15 in the door.
A bracket 21 is secured to the jamb 22 to lie in the path of travel of the latch 12. The bracket has a series of spaced apertures 23 for receiving the latch, and when the latch is engaged in any of said apertures the door cannot be moved into closed position without operating the spindle knob, while it can be pushed to the open position without the operation of the knob. To retain the door fully open without extending the bracket through the entire length of travel of the latch, a catch 24 is provided for the latch 12 at the wall.
I claim:
1. The combination of a swinging door provided with a knob-operated lock and having a recess in one face about the knob spindle, and normally covered by the face plate of the look, a recess in its upper. edge, and a passage connecting the said recesses, a spring pressed latch in the recess inthe edge ofthe door, a plate-like slide in the recess about the spindle and having an. opening therein through which the knob spindle passes, a wire or rod in the passage in the door and connecting the slide with the latch, a tumbler on the knob spindle within the said recess and outside of the lock casing, said tumbler lying wholly within the opening of. the slide and having oppositely projecting members engaging the bottom wall of the same, and an apertured bracket secured to the door jamb and lying in the path of the said latch. 7
' Patented Feb. 27, 191-7.
which the knob spindle passes and within which the tumbler Wholly lies so as to engage the bottom wall thereof, a spring latch at the upper edge of the door, a wire connecting the slide with the latch, and an apertured bracket secured to the door jamb and lying in the path of the said latch.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in'the presence of two subscribing witnesses. I
' FRANK P. FAIRBANKS. Witnesses:
