COMBINED LATCH AND LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 729,603, dated June 2, 1903.

To all whom itv may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH E. KEVERLINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Coalhill, in the county of Venango and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a newand useful Combined Latch and Look, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to combined latches and locks, and has for'its objects to produce a device of this character which will be simple of construction, efficient in operation, inexpensive to manufacture, and one which when applied to a door is adaptedto automaticall y engage suitable members carried by the door-casing and by the framework of the building adjacent to the door to maintain the door in either its open or closed position.
The invention comprises the details of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional elevation of a door, its casing, and adjacent framework, illustrating my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 isavertical transverse sectional elevation on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detailed view of the locking-bolt and its attendant mechanism.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates a door, 2 its jamb or casing, and 3 the adjacent wallor framework of the building. The parts may all be of the usual or any desired form of construction, inasmuch as they are entirely foreign to my invention.
In myimproved latch and lock, iindicates a base-plate, attached by screws or otherwise to the side face of the door and provided with form of a square bolt, driven into the doora suitable keyhole 5. The end of the baseplate is bent at right angles to form a supplemental laterally projecting base plate 6, which when the plate 4 is attached to the door projects into a mortised orifice 7 formed therein.
8 indicates ahollow shell or casing, removably secured to the base-plate etin any suitable manner, but preferably by screws, and
9 a locking-bolt slidingly mounted in the easing and suitably sustained and guided therein, the locking-bolt being provided with a laterally-projecting finger 10, by means of which the bolt may be actuated by hand, and with a notch or recess for the engagement of a key to operate the bolt.

12 indicates a suitable sheath or casing, attached by screwsor otherwise removably to the supplemental base-plate '6 and adapted when the latch is in position on the door to fit within the mortised orifice 7, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The casing 12 is in the form of a vertically-disposed plate provided with laterally-projecting top and bottom flanges which bear against the upper and lower edges of the supplemental base-plate (3 to form a suitable recess between the plates.
13 is a horizontally-disposed integral flange, formed at the inner end of the casing 12 and adapted to be attached to the door-jamb by means of a screw or otherwise.
14 indicates a latch member, disposed transversely of the door and having a suitable shank 15, which lies within the recess between the casing 12 and supplemental base-plate 6 and is pivoted between them by means of a screw or the like 16. The latch member is provided at the inner side of the door with a suitable catch 17, which is downwardly disposed, and at the outer side of the door with a suitable upwardly-disposed catch 18. The latch member is pivoted at a point nearer its outer than its inner end, which causes the inner end falling by gravity to its engaging position, and this movement of the inner end raises the outer end to maintain the same in its engaging position.
19 indicates a member, preferably in the jamb, with one end projectinghorizontally therefrom in position to be engaged by the catch 17 of the latch member when the door is closed, and 20 indicates a member, preferably in the form of a staple, driven into the framework 3 in position to be engaged by the catch 18 of the latch member when the door is opened. The bolt 19.has its upper edge beveled, as at 21, to permit the latch member to slide freely upward upon the same when engaging the bolt, and the staple 20 has the lower edge of its crown portion similarly beveled for a like purpose.
In the operation of the device as the door is closed the inner end of the latch member will slide upon and engage over the bolt or member 19 and may be locked in such position from the outside by actuating the locking-bolt by means of the key to slide the same forward until its end overlies the shank of the latch or from the inside by actuating the bolt by hand through the medium of the finger 10, as will be readily understood. When the door is moved to an open position, the catch 18 will automatically engage the staple 20 to prevent accidental closing of the door. This automatic engagement of the catch 18 with the staple is due to the fact that the inner end of the latch member normally swings downward by gravity, and thus maintains the outer end in its upward or latching position.
. From the foregoing it will be seen that I produce a device which is of extreme simplicity and has no mechanism which can possibly become disordered or rendered otherwise defective except through the natural wearing out of the parts and that the latch Will be entirely automatic in its action in engaging the members to maintain the door both in its open and in its closed position. In
attaining these ends Ido not limit or confine myself to the details herein shown and described, as various changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combination with a base-plate, of a casing carried thereby, a pivoted latch member disposed at right angles to the casing, a locking-bolt slidably mounted in the casing and adapted for engagement with the latch member, and a lateral finger associated with the bolt for operating the same by hand, said bolt being also operable by a key.
2. The combination with a base-plate, of a right-angularly-disposed supplemental baseplate carried thereby, a casing mounted on the supplemental base, a latch member pivoted in the casing, a casing carried by the main base-plate, a locking-bolt slidingly mounted in the casing and provided With a lateral finger for operating the bolt by hand to lock the latch member, said bolt also adapted for operation by a key.
