WINDOW-SASH LOCK.
To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, I-IENRY CHEvoLA, J r., a citizen of the United States, and residing at NewYork, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tindow-Sash Locks, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to window sash locks, and particularly to locks of this class adapted to be applied to vertically movable sashes, the sashes being divided centrally and vertically into twoseparate parts which are hinged at the sides of the window frame and adapted to swing inwardly to facilitate the cleaning thereof, and for vother purposes; and the object of the invention is to provide sash locks of the class specified which can only be manipulated when the sashes are in an open position, or when the top sash is lowered and the bottom sash raised; and with this -and other objects in view the invention consists in sash locks of t-he class specified constructed and operating as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my invention are designated by suitable reference characters H in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is an inside view of a window having sashes constructed in the manner set out, and provided with my improved lock 5 Fig. 2 a transverse section on the line-2 2I of Fig. 1, and on an enlarged scale and indicating the sashes open in dotted lines Fig. 3 a section on the line 8-3 of Fig. 2,y

In the drawing forming part of this specification, and for the purpose of` showing the construction and operation of my improved sash locks, I have shown at a a window frame comprising the usual side members a2 and top and bottom members a3 and at, and in which are mounted the usual top sash Z and bottom sash c. The sides of the frame are provided with the usual counterbalance weight chambers in which are placed the usual counterbalance weights e, and the sashes are supported by the usual counterbalance cords f connected with said Specification of Letters Patent.

3, 4 and 5, and in this construction Ivemploybottom ofthe separate sash members and the l shorter arms of which are countersunk in the adjacent faces of said separate members, and said plates are secured in position by screws m. The plate j is provided in the angle portion thereof with a longitudinal bed member jz at the inner end of which is a push-button js having an inwardly directed knob jf and secured at j is a spring arm je which ranges longitudinally of the plate j yand which is adapted to bear on the knob y'4 and which is also provided-at its free end with a stop pin j7, and secured to the plate j in the angle portion thereof or adjacent thereto is a keeper js having a to-ngue portion jg which overlaps the free end of the spring arm jG and is adapted to limit the movement thereof. rlhe plate k is provided with a central longitudinal and countersunk slot or opening 7:2 between which and the angle portion of said plate is a bed plate 7c3, and said plate 7c is also provided with a keeper kt similar to the keeper js, and employed in connection with the plates and 7c and the parts connected therewith' as above described is a lock bolt n which is freely movable through the keepers js and /ct and one end port-ion of which is provided with a triangular head n2 having a neck port-ion a3 which passes through the slot or opening 702 and the other end portion of the bar a is provided with an aperture n* adapted to receive the stop pin y'7 of the spring arm jG, and secured in the keeper 7a4 is a spring 0 which bears on the bolt n and regulates the movement thereof, and said bolt is adapted to be operated or moved longitudinally by means of the head n2 thereof and is freely movable through apertures p in the shorter arm port-ions of the L- shaped plates 7' and 7c.
In Fig. 3 of the drawing, one of the locking devices z' is shown in operative position so as to secure the separate parts of one of the sashes together at the top thereof, and in order to unlock the sash members, the push-button is forced inwardly. This forces the corresponding arm inwardly and releases the bolt a and said bolt may be moved to the right by means of the head n2 thereof until it is entirely withdrawn from the plate /c and the sash member with which said plate is connected and the separate sash members may be swung inwardly as will be readily understood. Vhen it is desired to lock the said sash members together they are swung back or outwardly into the position shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, and the bolt n is forced to the left by means of the head n2 thereof. The end of the bolt a in which the aperture a* is formed is beveled as shown at a5 and in the above described operation said beveled end passes under the stop pin at and forces the spring arm j downwardly or inwardly as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3 until the bolt reaches the position shown in said figure, in which position the arm jG operates automatically to secure said bolt, and the sash members are locked together. It will be understood that this operation is exactly the same both at the top and bot-tom of the separate sash members of each of the sashes.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I accomplish the object of my invention as hereinbefore set out by means of a simple, effective and comparatively ineX pensive construction and in which changes and modifications may be made, within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a sash lock, two L-shaped plates, the longer parts of which are provided on the inner sides thereof in the angles thereof with bed members, a bolt movable longitudinally on said bedmembers and through the shorter parts of said Lshaped plates, means for operating said bolt through the longer part of one of said plates, the longer part of the other plate being provided with a push button movable therethrough, and with a spring arm which extends over said button, and bears thereon, and over said bolt, said spring arm being provided with a projection and said bolt with an aperture adapted to receive said projection, and the longer parte of said plates being provided with keepers through which said bolt passes.
