FRANK G. HIGH, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
SASH-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 742,787, dated October 27, 1903.
Application filed March I2, 1903. Serial No. 147,526.
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, FRANK G. HIGH, a citizen of the United States, residing 'at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners,of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to means to secure the sashes of a window from passing each other 1o to open the closure made by such sashes when the fastener is in its operative position; and the object thereof is to provide a simple and inexpensive fastener that will hold the sashes locked against opening any part of the closure of the window made by such sashes or which may lock such sashes to obtain a partial openingr of the closure of the window made by the sashes. I accomplish this object by the fastener described herein and illustrated zo in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is an end elevation of my sashfastener and a. fragment of the casing and window-sashes. Figs. 2 and 3 are side sectional views of the fastener and fragments of z 5 the sashes.
In the drawings, A is the window-casing.
B is the upper and O is the lower sash of the window. To the top of the lower sash above the side rail is secured the lower member of my improved sash-fastener D. This member of the sash-fastener is composed of a casing a,which may be secured to the sashrail by screw b. A pawl c, having a handle c', is mounted in the casing on rod d. On this rod is also mounted a spring e, one end of which is affixed to the pawl and the other end is affixed to the casing. This spring is so wound that a downward impulse is given to the inner end of the pawl, and at the same 4o time the spring pushes against the pawl to keep it in frictional engagement with the side of the case and to keep the handle of the pawl under catch a' on that side of the case when the pawl is thrown up into its inoperative position, as shown in Fig. 2. To the side rail of the upper sash is secured the ratchet-bar f,which the pawl engages when in its opera- (No model.)
tive position to lock the sashes against enlarging the opening in the closure of the window formed by the sashes. This ratchet-bar is preferably countersunk, as shown. It will be observed that when the sashes completely close the opening myimproved sash-fastener is adapted to lock them in that position. It will also be observed that the sash can be locked against further opening of the closure of the window at any point on the ratchetbar, thereby permitting the lower sash to be raised from the bottom or the upper sash to be lowered from the top, or both sashes can be moved to leave an opening at the top and bottom in order that the room may be properly ventilated, and at the same time neither sash can be moved sufficiently to permit of a person gaining access to the room through the window. The pawl may be locked in its operative position by passing a small rod or nail (not shown) through a hole g in the casing. These features are particularly desirable for windows that can be easily reached from the ground or from a porch-floor.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire Patent,Kis-
A sash-fastener comprising a casing adapted to be secured to the top of the lower sash, said casing having a catch on one side thereof a rod extending across said casing; a pawl pivotally mounted in said casing on said rod;
a spiral spring on said rod having one end thereof affixed to said pawl and the other end afixed to said casing and adapted to springpress said pawl downward and against the side of the case; aratchet-bar adapted to be secured to the upper sash and to be engaged by said pawl substantially as described herein.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 6th day of March, 1903.
FRANK G. HIGH.
