To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH BRUNO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mianus, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in iVindow-Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to window locks and has for its object to provide an improved window lock which will be simple in construction and effective in operation.
The invention further has for its object to provide an improved window lock which can not be opened from the outside by 111- truders or other persons seeking to surreptitiously enter the house.
Referring to the accompanying drawings:Figure 1 is a view of a portion of a window with parts broken away disclosing the invention. Fig. 2 is a view of a window sill and the lower end of a window provided with two locks constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 3 is a side view of the lock with the window sill and sash in section on the line w-m of Fig. 2.
In carrying out the invention a window sash of a window has its lower horizontal rail formed with a socket 2 cut in the inner face of the rail and extending to its bottom. The socket 2 is covered by a suitable plate 3 is mortised into the face of the rail and secured thereto by screws 3 or any other suitable fastening. The window sill 1 is provided with a recess 4' located below the recess 2 in the rail of the window sash, said recess i beingcovered by a metallic plate 5 having depending flanges (3 which extend to the bottom of the recess 4: and reinforce and protect the same. The plate 5 which is mortised to the upper surface of the sill 4L is secured in place by screws 7 or other suitable means. Mounted in the recess 2 is a vertical hook, the shank 8 of which extends through a hole 9 in the plate 5, the lower end of said shank 8 being pivotally mounted on a pin 10 mounted in the sides of the recess 4. The lower end of the shank 8 is provided with an arm 11 extending laterally therefrom and beneath said arm 11 is located a suitable spring 12, as here shown preferably consisting of a V-shaped spring having one arm resting upon and being secured to a support 13. The spring by its compression against the under side of the arm 11 holds the hook in vertical position, as shown in Fig. 1. Extending through the plate 3 is a short rod 14 having a head 15 at one end with a serrated periphery for the purpose of rotating the rod 14 by the thumb and finger. The other end of the rod is provided with a depending arm 16 which is adapted to be swung beneath the rod 1 1 against the shank S of the hook and moved back out of engagement with the rod 14. as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. It will be noted that the point of the shank 8 is located so close to the top of the plate 5 that even if a knife or other thin flat instrument were inserted between the lower end of the window sash and the plate 5 it could not push back the shank 8 owing to the location of its pivotal point. By having the window lock located as described on the inner side of the window sash the lock cannot be tampered with by any one from the outside.
A single lock constructed as hereinbefore described may be employed, but preferably two are used, as shown in Fig. 2, each be ing located adjacent to the end of the lower horizontal rail of a lower window sash.
Having described the invention, what I claim is:
1. In a device of the character described, a swinging catch located in a window sill projecting upward therefrom, and a rotary pin mounted in the lower end of a lower window sh having a handle on its outer end, and an arm on its inner end, said pin being adapted to engage said swinging catch, and said arm being adapted to throw said catch out of engagement with said rotary pin.
