To all whom it may concern f 1 Be it known that I, VINZENZ ZSUZSITS, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Aurora, in the county of Kane andiState as will enable dthersskilled in the art to which it appertains same. j I
My invention relates to improvements in locks and latches and more particularly to the latter. p
The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of the hereinafter described character'which may be easilyand cheaply manufactured and which will read to make and use the ily perform the functions for which it is designed.
In carrying out the above end, a secondary object becomes to provide simple and efficlent means for supporting a gravity catch memher in the outer edge of a door.
With the above objects in view, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction and combination herein described and claimed and shown in the drawings wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation of a screen door and its frame, showing the application of my invention thereto; Fig. 2 is an enlarged front elevation of'a portion. of the I and illustrating more clearly the parts shown in Fig. 1; Figs. 3 and 4 are respectively vertical and horizontal sections taken on the lines 38 and 44 of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is an inside elevation of the parts seen in Fig.
'2; Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the gravity catch; and Fig. 7 is a similar view of the pivoted pawl employed for locking the same against movement.
In the accompanying drawings, I have illustrated a screen door D which is hinged at H within the usual frame F, a suitable spring (not shown) being preferably employed for normally closing said door. The free upright edge of the door D is recessed transversely as indicated at 1 to receive a rectangular attaching plate 2 whose parallel upright edges are provided with outwardly extending flanges 3 and 4 which terminate flush with said free edge of the door D. The flange 3 is provided with an inverted Specification qr Letters Patent f Patented Apr. 27, 1915.
App1icationfi1edIu1y20, 1914. Serial no. 852,025. I
L-shaped slot 5 whose horizontal portion opens through its free edge while the flange 4;1 s notched as indicated at 6, these provisionsbeing made for a purpose to become evident. The plate 2 may be secured to the door D in any suitable manner but prefen ably by apair of screws 7 (see Fig. 3).
cated at 11 and then extended longitudinally v as seen at 12, said portion 12 having anopening 13 which receives the pivot stud 8. By this formation, the portion 12 of the plate 10 is offset longitudinally on the opposite portion 14 thereof, said portion 14 being notched on its under side as clearly seen at 15 for coaction with a screw or other suitable stop 16 which projects inwardly from the adjacent portions of the frame F. As clearly seen in Figs. 3 and 6, the outer end of the portion 12 inclines upwardly and outwardly as indicated at 12 while the other end of the portion 14 inclines outwardly and upwardly as indicated at 14. It will further or opened, for which purpose said frame is preferablyrecessed as indicated at 20 in the drawings.
When the parts are assembled, the end portion 12 of the plate 10 contacts with the attaching plate 2 while the opposite end portion 14 thereof is spaced a considerable dis tance, from said plate as clearly seen in Fig. 4, thereby allowing its inclined outer edge 14 to contact with the screw 16 as the door closes, thus raising the weighted end of the latch 9 which again falls when the notch 15 is located above said screw, thus eflectually latching the door in closed position. 7
In most cases, it becomes expedlent to provide means whereby the latch 9 may be positively locked against movement and for this purpose, I have provided a pawl 01' button 21 which is pivoted at 22 to the up- ,From the foregoing. desori tion, taken in 'COn-I-mCt'lQIl with the accompanying draw in gs-, it will beseen that I have producedan extremelysimple door latch which may be 7 inexpensively manufactured yet one which will bej hi-ghly efficient in operation. w i
Having thus described my invention, what I claim-as few and desire to "secure LettersJPatent'is: p V Z- Ina device of the -character described, 'uprightvertic'ztlly elongated attaching plate designed tobe r -sec-ured w-i-thin a notch in I the -freeed'ge of adoor, said attachingrplate 25 having. laterally projecting flanges on its flop iesoftl is patent may be obtained-for upright side edges, one of said flanges having an upright notch in its free edge, and
the other flangehaving an upright'slot, a horizontally elongated latch plate pivoted to said attaching plate to swing in a vertical plane, one end of said latch plate being extended outwardly through the upright slot and contacting with the upper end thereof, and the other end of said latch plate being ofiset from the attaching plate and extending outwardly through said notch, said lastn'amed end having a locking notch in its lower edge, and being inclined upwardly and outwardly from said notch, and operating ears spaced outwardly from the flanges of the attaching plate and formed integrally withthe ends of the latch plate.
.In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand: in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
