SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 574,620, dated January 5, 1897'. Application filed March 6, 1896. Serial No. 582,132. (No model.)

Beit known that I, JAMES B. MORGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Davenport, county of Scott, and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Locks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in sash-locks; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out particularly in the claim.
The object of the invention is to provide a sash-lock that is cheap, simple, and durable, and one that shall securely retain the meetingrails of window-sashes from vertical movement; also one that will hold said rails against horizontal movement, thereby overcoming jar and rattle of the window, which objectis attained by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of portions of two rails of window-sashes provided with my improved lock. Fig. 2 is a top plan of the lock and rails in like relation; and Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the rails with my improved lock uniting them, said rails being shown in section.
Referring to the letters of reference, A designates the bottom rail of the upper sash, and B the top rail of the lower sash.
O designates a metal plate having struck and partially severed therefrom a central portion forming a tongue D, said tongue having one of its sides parallel with the side of the plate 0, and the other side d curved. The outer end of said tongue is turned up, forming a nose e, said plate 0 being also provided with suitable apertures through which screws, bolts,or other devices maybe passed to secure said plate in place upon the rail of the window-sash.
E designates an arm, one end of which is provided with an aperture through which a screw or other device maybe passed to secure it to the rail opposite the plate 0, the
opposite end of said arm being bent at a right angle to the main portion. Then the arm is in position, said bent portion stands vertically. Said arm E is mounted upon a suitable washer F, said washer being about the thickness of the plate 0, and is employed for raising the arm E, so that it may be swung on a plane with the top face of the plate 0, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
The operation of this improved sash-lock is as follows: The plate 0 having been secured in place upon one of the rails of a windowsash, preferably the top rail of the lower sash, with one edge projecting over said rail, as shown at H, and the tongue D standing from the upper face of said plate, on the rail opposite, or the one indicated by the referencecharacter A, is secured the arm D by mounting said arm over the washer, as described,
and secured by passing a suitable screw through said arm and washer. Then it is desired to lock the window, the sashes are moved vertically until the upper faces of the rails A and B are flush, when the arm D is swung over the rail B and plate 0 by taking hold of the upright portion I, said arm also being swung under the tongue D, the nose of said tongue being raised, as indicated at e, to permit said arm to freely pass thereunder, and the edge farthest from the pivot of said arm E is curved, as shown at d, said curve being somewhat eccentric to said pivot, so that when the upright portion is moved around said curved edge it will draw the rails together, as will be well understood, securely lockin g the rails together against vertical or horizontal movement. The edge H of the plate 0 extending over the rail A preventsan instrument, as a knife-blade, for instance, being inserted between the rails A and B and moving the arm E out of engagement with the tongue D and plate 0, for it is evident that should a blade be passed up between two rails, as A and B, provided with this improved lock or sash-fastener mounted thereon said blade would be stopped as soon as it came in contact with the end of the plate 0, as shown at B, Fig. 2, and would not be permitted to touch or move the arm E.
It will be seen that the parts comprising this improved lock are very few and simple,
and such that they are not liable to get out of order. They are also cheaply made, as they may be stamped from sheet metal.
Having thus fully set forth my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a sash-lock, the combination of the plate, the tongue struck therefrom and standing adjacent thereto, said plate adapted to be mounted on one rail of a window-sash and to project over the side thereof onto the rail of the opposite sash, the movable arm, the angled portion on said arm, the washer under the pivoted end of said arm, said arm adapted to be swung between said tongue and the plate for the purpose described.
