Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 24, 1914..
Application filed June 18, 1913. Serial No. 774,347.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BURQUEST MARKLE erica, residing at Bellevue, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saslnllocks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to sash locks, and he imary object of my invention is to urnish the sash of a window with a device hat can. be easily and quickly swung into )osition to prevent the sashes of a window rom being opened to that extent that a person could surreptitiously enter a room or a p a r ii men t.
further object of this invention is to provide a simple, durable and inexpensive sash lock that can be easily and quickly in stalled, the location of the lock being such that it cannot be tampered with by a burglar or other person.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Illeference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the sash lock, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, and 3 is a front elevation of the lock.
A look in accordance with this invention comprise. an oblong plate 1 provided with openings 2 for screws 53, whereby said plate can secured to the side rail 4: of an upper sash, adjacent to the meeting rail 5 of said sash. The upper end of the plate is bent to form a yoke 6, and extending through said yoke is a screw 7 that cooperates with the screws 3 in retaining the plate 1 in engagement with the rail l. Pivotally mounted upon the screw 7, within the yoke 6 is a latch 8 having a finger piece 9. The upward movement of the latch 8 is limited by the top of the yoke 6 and to hold said latch at right angles to said plate, the plate 1 is slitted, as at 10 and the slitted material bent to form a resilient detent 11. The detent 11 is of such length as to engage under the latch S and to hold the same in a horizontal position in the path of the lower sash 12 of the window. it is therefore apparent that the lower sash 12 when raised will impinge the latch 8 and further upward movement of the lower sash is prevented. Of course the upper sash cannot be lowered on account of the latch striking the meeting rail of the lower sash. When it is desired to raise the lower sash or lower the upper sash the resilient detent 11 is pressed in the plane of the plate 1 and then the latch S can be swung downwardly into parallelism with said plate. i
One embodiment of the invention has been illustrated, but it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
li hat I claim. is
1. A sash lock comprising a plate. a yoke carried by the upper end of said plate, a latch having one end pivo-tally mounted in said yoke and adapted to be swung upwardly at right angles to said plate, and a resilient detent forming part of said plate and adapted to extend under the lower edge of said latch.
2. In a sash lock, the combination with the rail of an upper sash, of a plate secured thereto, a yoke carried by the upper end of said plate, a latch pivotally mounted in said yoke and limited in its upward movement by said yoke, a finger piece carried by said latch, and a resilient detent formed by slitting said plate, said detent normally on gaging under the lower edge of said latch for maintaining said latch at right angles to said plate.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
