Description

R. G. HAUSDORFER & J. E. MURRAY. KEYHOLE GUIDE.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA B.
Patented Feb. 8, 1910.
UNITED STATES PATEN T OFFIUE.
REINI-IOLD G. HAUSDORFER AND JAY E. MURRAY, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
KEYHOLE-GUIDE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 8, 1910.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, REINHOLD G. HAUS- DORFER and JAY E. MURRAY, citizens of the United States, and residents of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Keyhole- Guide; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to key guiding means; and has for its Object the provision, in association with a key-hole, of simple and eflicient` means for facilitating the finding of the same in the dark or by blind persons.
The invention is fully described in the following specification, and a preferred embodiment thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,-
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a doorlock plate embodying our invention, with the key-hole guard in normal position, and Fig. 2 is* a similar view of the door-look plate with the groove moved into position to uncover the key-hole.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a door-look plate of any desired form, and a the key-hole therein. Pivoted above the key-hole a is` an escutcheon or key-hole guard Z), the weight of which is so distributed relative to its pivot 0 as to cause the guard to normally hang in position to cover the key-hole. This guard has one side provided with a substant ially U-shaped incut (l and is preferably formed at the margin of such incut with an upwardly projecting fiange or shoulder e. When the guard Z) is moved in one direction to uncover the key-hole the incut (Z, which, in conjunction with its marginal shoulder, is intended to form a means for guiding the entrance of a key to the hole a, moves into register with the hole with its long side or loop portion standing in juxtaposition to one side of the key-hole and the upper and lower sides or legs thereof closely embracing the respective ends of the hole, as shown in Fig. 2. The uncovering movement of the guard b is stopped by a pin or lug f on the plate A when the incut (Z is moved into register with the hole.
It is evident that the shape of the incut d may be changed as the shape of the key-hole may require. In finding the key-hole it is only necessary to place the key in the incut (Z of the guard, which incut can be readily found due to the prominence of its marginal portion, and then pushing the guard to the left by a movement of the key until stopped by contact with the lug f, at which point the key is in position to enter the hole.
TVe wish it understood that our invention is not limited to the specific construction and arrangements of the parts except in so far as such limitations are specified in the claims.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-
1. In association with a key-hole, an escutcheon disposed eXternally of and pivoted to normally hang to cover such hole and having a part fashioned to serve as a guide for the entrance of a key into the hole when the escutcheon is in full open position, and means for limiting the Opening movement of the escutcheon.
2. In association with a key-hole, an escutcheon pivoted to normally hang over the key-hole entrance and movable on its pivot to uncover the same, said escutcheon having one side provided with an incut which is marginally flanged and adapted to register with the hole when the escutcheon is moved to open position and to serve as a key guide thereto, and means for stopping the Opening movement of the escutcheon when its incut is moved into register with the hole.
In testimony whereof, we have hereunto signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
REINHOLD G. HAUSDORFER. J AY E. MURRAY. VVitnesses C. W. OwEN, OORNELL SGHREIBER.
