Description

O. M. RUMBAUGH. DOOR SECURING MEANS. APPLICATION EIILED MAR. 24, 1913.
4 Patented June 30,1914.
glllllmml iv 25? g y,lllr H Mum)! J9 I i E/ I ll" nlIII WNN %%%m w 6 X UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES M. RUMBA'U'GH, OF ELKI-IAR'I, IOWA.
DOOR-SECURING MEANS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES M. RUM- BAUGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elkhart, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Securing Means, of which the following is a specification.
The main objects of this invention are to provide a device to be connected to a door to securely hold the door in open position or in closed position; also to provide a device that will permit the door being swung with one thrust to an outward open position and hold the door in such outward open position; further to provide a device that will permit the door when open after releasing the securing means, to be swung to its inward closed position with one thrust and hold the door in such closed position; and still further to provide a securing means for a door in its outward open and inward closed position which can be released from the inside or outside of the door.
These and o'ther features, capabilities and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a detailed description of the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing an embodiment of the invention connected to a door. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of an improved device of this character constructed in accordance with the principles of this invention and showing a door in section, in closed position and also diagrammatically in open position. Fig. 3 is a cross section of the parts shown in Fig. 2 on the line 1- l, showing the locking means in locked position, and Fig. 4: is a similar cross section showing the locking means released.
In the drawing there is shown a triangular bracket 6 which is provided adjacent the hinged side of the door and to which bracket is pivoted an arm 9, and which arm has an enlargement 17 at its other end. The enlargement 17 is provided with a triangular opening having its base at the bottom. Across the door in alinement with the arm 9 is provided a guideway 18 which is pivoted at the upper portion of its ends in the bearings 19, 19. The lower portion of this guideway is preferably bent outward to form a ledge 20. In this ledge 20 there are provided notches 21 and 22, one near each end of the led e 20. An opening 23 is provided in the cor through which a handle Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 30, 1914 Application filed March 24, 1913. Serial No. 756,300.
bar 24 is passed. This handle bar 2 1 is fixed to the extreme end of the guideway 18 and operates to rock said guideway 18. The triangular opening of the enlargement 17 is is adapted to receive the guideway 18 and slide along the same. To release the door when it is in either of these locked positions, it is only necessary to raise the arm 9 and push the door in the required direction.
The operation is as follows: WVhen the door is in closed position the enlargement 17 will be at the'near end of the guideway 18 and will be caught by the notch 21, to lock the door. By raising the handle bar 24, the enlargement is released and the door may be swung outward into open position. As soon as the handle bar at is dropped, the ledge 20 projects outward and when the door has reached its open position and the enlargement 17 has slid to the far end of the guideway 18, the enlargement 17 will be caught by the notch 22 and thus securely hold the door in open position;
While there is. herein shown and described only one embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that various changes and modifications may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
' Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a door securing means, a bracket secured to the door frame adjacent the hinged portion of a door, a guide way provided across the door and pivoted to swing toward and away from the door, said guide way having a lateral projecting portion provided with spaced notches, and an arm pivoted to the bracket and arranged in alinement with the guide way, said arm mounted to swing on a pivot arranged transversely with respect to the pivot of the guide way, a portion of the arm embracing the guide way, said arm having a sliding connection with the guide way and adapted to be caught by the said notches.
2. In a door securing means, a bracket secured to the door frame adjacent the hinged portion of a door, a guide way provided across the door and pivoted to swing toward and away from the door, said guide way having a lateral projecting portion provided with spaced notches, an arm pivoted to the bracket and arranged in aline- 10 3. In a door securing means, a. bracket secured to the door frame adjacent the;
hinged portion of a door, a guide way provided across the door and pivoted to swing toward and away from the door, said guide way having lateral projecting vided with spaced notches, an arm pivoted to the bracket and arranged in alinement with the guide way, said arm mounted to swing on a pivot arranged transversely with respect to the pivot of the guide way, a portion of the arm embracing the guide way, said arm having a sliding connection with the guide way and adapted to be caught by said notches, and means for releasing the arm with respect to the notches, the said means embodying an operating device connected with the arm and extending through the door to the opposite side thereof.
4. lln a door securing means, a bracket secured to the door frame adjacent the hinged portion of a door, a guide way rovided across said door and ivoted at P the upper portion of each of its ends, the lower edge of said guide way bent outward to form a ledge, a notch near one end of said ledge, an arm pivoted at one end to said bracket and in alinement with said guide way, and an enlargement provided at the other end of said arm formed to slide along said guide way, said enlargement adapted to be caught by said notches.
5. In a door securing means, a bracket secured to the door frame adjacent the hinged portion of a door, a guide way provided across said door and pivoted at the upper portion of each of its ends, the lower edge of said guide way being bent to form a ledge, a notch near each end of said ledge, an arm pivoted at one end to said bracke and in alinement with said guide way, and an enlargement provided at the other end portion pro of said arm, triangular slot in said enlarged portion adapted to receive said guide and slide along the same, the said enlarge ment being adapted to be caught by said notches.
6. In a door securing means, a bracket secured to the door frame adjacent to the hinged portion of a door, a guide way provided across said door and pivoted at the upper portion of each of its ends, the lower portion of said guide Way being bent out ward to form a ledge, a notch near each end of said ledge, an arm pivoted at one end to said bracket and in alinementwith said guide way, and an enlargement provided at the other end of said arm, a triangular slot in said enlargement adapted to receive said guide way and slide along the same, the said enlargement being adapted to be caught by said notches, and means for releasing said enlargement from the other side of the door when the same is caught in said notches.
7. In a door securing means, a bracket secured to the door frame adjacent to the hinged portion of a door, a guide way provided across said door and pivoted at the upper portion of each of its ends, the lower portion of said guide way being bent out ward to form a ledge, a notch near each end of said ledge, an arm pivoted at one end to said bracket and in alinement with said guide way, an enlargement provided at the other end of said arm, a triangular slot in said enlargement adapted to receive said guide way and slide along the same, the said enlargement being adapted to be caught by said notches, and means for releasing said enlargement from the other side of the door when the same is caught in said notches, said means constituting an opening proiided in said door, a handle bar secured to one end of said guide way at the 95 lower edge thereof and passing through said opening.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name to this specification. in the presence of two Witnesses.
