HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 8, 1915.
Application filed May 28, 19 14. Serial No. 841,646.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, WILLIAM .F. HAYS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Osbornes Mills, in the county of Itoane and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a gate hinge and the principal object of the invention is to provide a hinge which is so constructed. that the gate will be normally held in a closed position and may be opened either inwardly or outwardly, the gate then returning to a closed position of its own weight. I Another object of the invention is to provide a gate hinge which is so constructed that it may be easily applied to a gate already in use and does not need any special device connecting the hinge'with the gate, the various elements of the hinges being so constructed that they may themselves be connected with the gate. V
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation showing a gate connected with a post by the improved hinge, portions of the gate' being broken away to show the manner of connecting the hinges with the gate and post; Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken along the line 22 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the upper hinge shown in Fig. 1.
The gate 10 is connected with the post 11 by a set of hinges which comprise an upper hinge designated in general by the numeral 12 in Fig. 1 and a lower hinge designated in general by the numeral 13 of this Fig. 1. The gate is pivotally mounted by the upper hinge and is so mounted by the lower hinge that when opened its free endwill swing upwardly and thus cause the gate to normally remain in the closed posi- 'The lower hinge comprises the fork 18 which is driven into the gate and has its arms 19 provided with notches for engaging the U-shaped brackets'Q O which are driven into the post 11. These hinges'may be applied to a gate already in use since it is simply necessary to drive the leaves 14: and 15 into the post and gate and then drive the brackets 20 and fork 18 into the post and gate. It will also be noted that these hinges can be very cheaply manufactured since they require a very small amount of material and are so formed that they can be easily stamped out by a suitable machine.
What is claimed is A hinge comprising a pair of U-shaped 'brackets'having sharpened penetrating arms and a fork provided with a penetrating prong and with arms extending from said prong in spaced relation and provided with notches for receiving said brackets;
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
