WILLIAM D. HARRISON, OF PINE BLUFF, ARKANSAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- FOURTH TO JOHN O. HARRISON.
BOX-=LID.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 385,305, dated June 26, 1888.
(No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM D. HARRISON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pine Bluff, in the county of Jefferson and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Box-Lids; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has relation to box lids; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts.
Figure 1 is a side elevation showing my invention attached thereto, closing the box. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of my invention opened. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are detail views.
My invention is described as follows:
Thelidis composed ofau upper part, A, and a lower part, B. The upper part, A, consists of the side piece, 1, end pieces, 2, glass 3, and metal strips 4- sunk in the open ends of the end pieces, 2, and bent down against the edge of the glass 3 to keep it in place, hinges 5, having the perforated face-pieces 6, perforated edge -pieces 7, and perforated extensions 8. The bottom part, B, of said lid is made exactly like the top part, and is trimmed the same, but has in addition a molding (represented by the dotted lines 9) on its inner face, which fits 011 the inside of the box, and hooks and eyes 10, to hold the lid to the box. The roller 11 is just long enough to reach from the inner edges of the end pieces, 2, to the inner edges of the other end pieces, and its position is such as to cover thejoint between the upper and lower glasses, so that when the upper part of thelid is opened back said roller will constantly fill the space left between said glasses, so that one edge piece 7 and extension 8; but where the lid is large and heavy I make the hinges with two edge pieces 7 and two extensions 8. Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. The combination, with abox-lid, as above described, of the hinges 5, having the facepicees 6, edge pieces 7, and extensions 8, roller 11, provided with the pivots 12, working in the perforations in said extensions, said roller adapted to fill the space left between the glasses 3 when the lid is opened, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with abox-lid, as above described, of the hinges 5, having the face pieces 6, edge pieces 7 and extensions 8, roller 11 provided with the pivots 12, working in the perforations in the said extensions, coilsprings 13, coiled around said pivots 12, their lower ends pressing against the lower end pieces and their upper ends against the upper end pieces, substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM D. HARRISON.
