RUSSELL B. FULLER, OF EVANSVILLE, INDIANA.
BOX-HINGE.
Application filed November 17, 1910.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 7, 1912.
Serial No. 592,942.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUSSELL B. FULLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Evansville, county of Vanderburg, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a combined corner iron and hinge for crates and boxes.
The object of my invention is to provide a convenient device which will at the same time be simple and durable.
Referring to the drawings :-Figure 1 is a perspective of a box with the cover partly broken away showing my invention in position. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the corner iron with link attached, Fig. 3 is a perspective of the part of the hinge partly broken away which attaches to the lid, and Fig. 4 is a slightly different form of link attachment to the corner-iron.
Referring fllIbkgT\ to the drawings: A represents the box and B the lid thereof, G represents one side of the corner iron and C the other side, D is a cut out portion in C, which cut out portion E is rolled or bent so as to inclose the lower end of link F which is a piece of link metal shaped substantially, as shown in the drawings. F thus is pivoted in loop E.
Fig. 3 shows a piece of fiat metal bent as shown and containing parallel sides G and H. At I is a slight offset or shoulder adapted to receive the upper portion of link F. The loop E is placed equally distant from the top and bottom edges of C and by doing this Fig. 2 is reversible and may be used upon either end of the box or crate. J and K are suitable holes through which the members are attached to the crate. In Fig. 4, two parallel vertical slits L are cut in C, and equally distant from the top and bottom edges of C, the metal between the slits is pressed out as shown at M and the lower ends of the link F are then inserted under the raised portion M and pressed together.
To attach my invention to the crate the upper part of link F is fitted into ofi-set I, and plates G and H are then respectively attached. permanently to the top and bottom sides of lid B. The corner iron is then attached as shown and the crate or box is ready for use. It is obvious that opening D may be of slightly different shape, to-wit: triangular, but if arranged as herein shown rolled portion E will be stronger. I might also have the rolled under portion of E so arranged as to slightly pierce A without changing the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a hinge, the combination with a corner iron comprising a pair of arms extending at right angles to each other, one of said arms being slotted in the direction of its length and having an outwardly struck put portion forming a loop, a link pivoted in said loop, said loop being centrally disposed with respect to the longitudinal side edges of said arm, whereby said hinge is reversible.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto al'lix my signature in' the presence of two witnesses.
RUSSELL B. FULLER.
