BUTTON-DISPLAY ATTACHMENT FOR BOXES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 24:, 1914.
Application filed. September 2, 1913. Serial No. 787,779.
To all whom it may concern Be it knownthat 1, Rain B. SPIVY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bonham, in the county of Fannin and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Button-Display Attachments for Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a button display attachment for boxes and other devices, and the primary object of the same 1s to pro vide means adapted to be secured to any suitable inclosing device, such as a box, type may be held exteriorly of the box as a display relatively to the character of buttons contained in the box, the attachment being of a particularform in one piece and readily secured in operative position and also oi? such shape as to requireonly one part thereof to be secured to a portion of the box in order to provide a stable application for the entire attachment.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing: Figure 1. is a longitudinal vertical section of a box showing the improved attachment' secured to the body thereof and illustrating the same as having a button withan eye associated with the display arm. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal yertical section of a portion of a box showing the attachment secured to the covering orlid member of the box and illustrating a button with an attaching pad associated with the display arm. Fig. 3 's a detail perspective view of the improved attachment.
The numeral 5 designates a box body which may be of any material, dimensions and proportions, and cooperating therewith as usual is a removable cover 6. As shown by Fig. 1, one end of the box has an opening 7 formed therein, and as illustrated by Fig. 2 the box has an elongated slot 8 constructed in one end and opening through the top edge thereof; and the cover 6, which is of greater dimensions than the cover shown by Fig. 1, is rovided with an opening 9 to register with the slot 8. i
The attachment, as shown in detail by Fig. 3, comprises a horizontal base loop 10, a converged support 11, and a display arm 12 continuous with one of the members of the support 11 and terminating in an angular pointed hook 13. The attachment is formed from a single piece of spring wire of suitable gage and the support 11 is approximately at an acute angle to the base 10 and continuous with the latter and comprises two members which are converged from the base; and one of the members is continued into the display arm 12, the latter being horizontally disposed and therefore at an angle to the support. The base 10 in the arrangement shown by Fig. 1 is secured against the inner side of the bottom of the box 5 by suitable fastenings 14 and 15 respectively engaging the loop or bent portion of the base and the side members there of. The support 11 extends upwardlylrom the base close to one end 01" the box and then projects inwardly owing to its angular formation, and the arm lfl movably extends through the opening 7 with the hook 13 uppermost. The support 11 may be readily pressed outwardly to provide suflicient space between the hook 13 and the adjacent end of the box 1'01 the application of a button thereto, and when the support 11 is released it immediately resumes its normal position, as shown by Fig. 1, and draws the arm 12 and hook 1.3 inwardly.
In Fig. 1 a button 16 withan eye is shown applied to the display attachment, the book 13 being passed through the eye and the latter in engagement with the outer portion oi.
the arm 19. so that when the support 11 is sprung baekwardly the hook 123 is caused to press against the outer side of the button and hold the latter positively over the opening 7. At any time any form of button having a eyemay be applied to the display arm 19 or over the book 13 when a change of the contents of the box is made.
In Fig. 9. the base 10 is shown secured by :lastcnings l-il and 15, similar to those illustrated by Fig. 1, to the inner side of the cover (5 and the support 11 projects downwardly with the arm 12 extending through the lower portion of the slot 8 and the opening 9, but the hook 13 is projected upwardly as in Fig. 1. The slot 8 is provided to permit the cover 6 to be readily removed and carry therewith the display attachment, the arm 12 then moving upwardly through the said slot, and in replacing the cover 6 the arm 12 is pushed downwardly through the slot 8 until the said cover is fully applied. In Fig. 2 a button 1? having an attaching pad 18 is shown, the pad being caught over the hook 13.
The improved attachment may be cheaply manufactured and economically applied, and it is proposed to manufacture the boxes of paper or cardboard, wood or metal in two or more sizes with the attachment applied thereto and sell the complete article as a stock or display box, principally to retail stores, but also to jobbers, manufacturers or any parties selling or displaying buttons. The attachment as a matter of course will be proportioned relatively to the box or in closure to which it is applied. In all applications of the attachment the straight hook 13 will be projected upwardly, preferably at a right angle to the arm 12, and as the latter arm is always maintained in horizontal position the said hook will be at all times held normally projected for convenient application of a button thereto.
l/Vhat is claimed is:
l. A button display attachment for a box or other inclosure, consisting of a horizontally disposed looped base, a straight support integrally continuing from one extremity of the base at an angle inwardly thereover and consisting of members converging from the base, and a horizontal display arm integrally projecting from the free extremity of the support and at an angle to the latter and terminating in an upwardly extending pointed hook, the horizontal display arm being a continuation of one of the members of the support.
2. The combination with a box having an opening through one end, of a button display attachment having a horizontal looped base secured to a portion of the box on the interior of the latter, a support integrally extending from one extremity of the base at an inward angle and comprising members which converge toward the end of the support farthest from the base, and a horizontal display arm integrally extending from and being a continuation of one of the members of the support and loosely projecting through the opening in the end of the box and having an upwardly projecting hook to engage a button and hold the latter against the end of the box, the support being movable outwardly toward and inwardly from the end of the box to give movement to the horizontal display arm in applying and detaching a button relatively thereto and to hold the button in display position.
3. As an improved article of manufacture, a button display attachment for a box or other inclosure, consisting of a single piece of resilient wire bent to form a horizontally disposed looped base fully open at one end and closed at the opposite end and having members continuing from the open end at an angle of inclination over the base and in converging planes to an apex where one of the members terminates and the other is continued in a horizontal plane at an angle and provided with a hook. at its free end.
Intestimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
