H. W. LIBBEY.
BOTTLE STOPPER.
No. 430,132. Patented June 17, 1890.

UNITED STA ES PATENT OFFICE.
HOSEA W. LIBBEY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS BOTTLE-STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 430,132, dated June 1'7, 1890.
Application filed July 19, 1888. Serial No. 280,364. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HOSEA W. LIBBEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Stoppers, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in bottle-stoppers; and the obj ectof the invention is the provision of a simple, cheap, and durable stopper, which will effectively be retained in position to close the mouth of the bottle, and which may be removed to unstopper the mouth of the bottle with ease.
To attain the desired object the invention consists of a wire surrounding the neck of the bottle and having loops or eyes, a bail having its ends bent to engage said eyes, then bent upward and outward and at the highest point formed into spring-coils and depressed from said coils, and havinga stopper mounted on the depressed portion, all as herein illustrated, described, and specifically claimed.
In the drawings, which illustrate a bottlestopper constructed in accordance with and embodying my invention, Figurel represents a front view of the bottle-stopper, and Fig. 2 represents a side or edge view thereof.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A A represents the neck of a bottle. To the under side of the enlarged portion A is secured a ring or wire B, provided with loops or eyes I).
O is a wire or bail bent to form a spring having its ends formed into hooks adapted to. engage the eyes I) of the ring or wire B, from the hooks bent upward, then outward above the m uth of the bottle, and at the highest point bent into coils c, terminating in a depressed portion c, 011 which is mounted the ball or stopper D.
From this construction it will be seen that the peculiar arrangement of the coils serves to hold the stopper firmly on the mouth of the bottle by their downward tension, and will give when the stopper is raised to permit the removal or displacement of the stopper from the mouth of the bottle.
I claim as my invention The herein-described bottle-stopper, consisting of thering having the loops or eyes, the bail having its terminals or ends engaging the eyes, then bent upward and outward and formed with coils, then depressed from said coils, and having a stopper mounted on the depressed portion.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 30th day of June, A. D. 1888.
HOSEA W. LIBBEY.
