BOTTLE-CLOSURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 731,934, vdated June 23, 1903.
Application filed December 6, 1902. Serial No. 134.160.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM J. MORAN, a citizen of the United States; residing at Yonkers, in the county of l/Vestchester and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Closures, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in bottle-closures; and its object is to provide a simple and durable closure which is inexpensive in construction and which is adapted to be detachably secured to a bottle.
Another object is to employ means whereby a bottle may be tightly sealed by the closure.
l/Vith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in providing oppositely-arranged ears upon the neck of a bot tle, each of these ears having a passage extending therethrough. 'One of these passages receives the inwardly-turned ends of a locking-loop formed of spring metal, while the remaining ear also receives inwardly-turned ends of a spring-metal hinge secured to one side of a disk. This disk is provided upon its under surface with a circular bead adapted to extend into the mouth of the bottle and force a paper disk thereinto, and thereby tightly seal said bottle.
The invention also consists in the further novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in which Figure l is a perspective View of a bottle having my improved closure fastened thereon. Fig. 2 is a section through said closure and a portion of the bottle. Fig. 3 is a detail View of the spring-hinge detached, and Fig. 4 is a similar view of the spring-fastening loop.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 is a bottle upon the opposite sides of the neck of which are formed ears 2, each of which is provided with a passage 3 therein. One of these passages is adapted to receive the inwardly-turned ends at of a rectangular loop 5, formed, preferably, of springwire having its central portion bent to form a handle 6, whereby said loop may be readily on modell) operated in a manner-hereinafter described. The remaining passage 3 receives inwardlyturned ends 7 of a substantially rectangular loop 8, and this loop is' L-sl1aped' in side elevation, and its intermediate portion 9 is soldered or otherwise secured to the top of a metal disk 10. A circular bead 11 is struck down from this disk and is adapted when said disk is in locked position to extend into the mouth of the bottle. A tongue 12, of heavy spring metal, is also soldered or other wise secured to the top or disk 10 at a point diametrically opposite the loop 8, and this tongue is of such length as to extend over the edge of the disk.
In operation when it is desired to seal the bottle 1 a disk 13/preferably of paper, is placed over the mouth thereof and the disk 10 is swung down thereupon. It is obvious that the head 11 will force the central portion of this paper disk down into the mouth of the bottle,where it will be firmly held when the lockinghoop 5 is swung up over the spring-tongue 12. Should the disk 10 or any of the parts connected thereto becomebroken, said disk can be readily detached from the bottle by springing the inwardly-turned ends 7 of the hinge-loop 8 out of the passage 3,within which they are normally seated. The locking-loop 5 can also be removed from the bottle in the same manner. The name of the owner of the bottle or any other information may be stamped orotherwise placed upon the central portion of the disk 10.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such. changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a bottle having an ear integral therewith, said ear having a passage extending therethrough; of a disk, a hinge to the disk, and inwardly-turned spring ends to said hinge adapted/robe detachably seated within the passage in the ear. 2. The combination with a bottle having an ear integral therewith, said ear having a passage therethrough; of a disk, a springrnetal hinge secured to the disk and extending to opposite sides of the ear, and inwardlyturned ends to said hinge adapted to be detaehably seated within the passage.
3. The combination with a bottle having an ear at one side thereof and integral therewith, said ear having a passage therethrough; of a disk, a hinge at one side thereof having inwardly-turned spring ends adapted to be detachably seated within the passage, means for securing the disk in closed position upon the bottle, and a bead upon the disk.
4:. The combination with a bottle having ears at opposite sides of the neck thereof, said ears having passages therethrough; ofa disk,
a bead upon the disk, a spring-metal tongue extending from the periphery of the disk, a hinge at one side of the disk, inwardly-turned spring ends thereto adapted to be detachably seated in the passage in one of the ears, and a locking-loop adapted to engage the tongue and secure the disk in closed position, said loop having inwardly turned spring ends adapted to be detachably seated in the passage in the remaining ear.
