F. MURPHY;
SLIP COVER OYSTER CAN..
APPLIOATION FILED rmm, 1910.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK MURPHY, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN CAN COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
SLIP-COVER OYSTER-CAN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 19,1913.
Application filed February 5, 1910. Serial No. 542,299.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK MURPHY, a citizen of the United States, residing in Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Slip-Cover Oyster-Cans, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in sheet metal cans or vessels of the kind having slip covers.
The object of my invention is to provide a slip cover can or vessel, suitable for shipment of oysters or other articles, which will be of a simple, efiicient and durable construction, capable of being cheaply manufactured and in which the slip cover will be securely fastened and sealed, so that it cannot be surreptitiously removed without detection.
The invention consists in the means herein shown and described for practically accomplishing this object or result, the same being more specifically set forth in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a side elevation of a slip cover sheet metal vessel embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a detail vertical section on line 83 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 4 is a detail elevation illustrating a modification.
In the drawing, 1 represents the body of the sheet metal can or vessel, the same being preferably provided with an external annular bead or shoulder 2 near its upper end below the mouth portion 3 thereof which re ceives the flange of the slip cover. The mouth portion 3 of the body is also preferably provided at its extreme upper end with an annular and inwardly curved edge or roll 4. The body of the vessel is also prefer ably furnished with bail ears 5 and a bail 6.
The mouth portion 3 of the body is provided with a plurality of cover fasteners or holding devices 7 and 8, which engage and cooperate with corresponding'cover fasteners or holding devices 9, 10 on the flange 11 of the slip cover 12.
The interengaging cover fasteners 7, 9 on body and cover may be of any suitable kind or construction, as for example, a rivet 7 on one of the members, preferably the body, and an opening 9 in the other member, preferably the cover. The other pair, 8, 10, of cooperating cover fasteners on body and cover may also be of any suitable kind or construction, each, however, preferably being an integral loop or offset portion of the body or cover through which a sealing device or wire 13 may be inserted when the cover is in place. After the sealing device or wire 13 is inserted through the cover fasteners 8, 10 on body and cover, the ends of the wire 13 are intertwisted and embedded in a suitable seal let to prevent removal or displacement of the cover without mutilation.
If preferred, the cover fasteners or loops on the body and cover of the vessel through which the sealing device or wire is inserted may, instead of being made integral with the body and cover respectively, be made in separate pieces and soldered in place, as indicated in the modification illustrated in Fig. 4.
I claim In combination, a sheet metal vessel body, a sheet metal slip cover therefor, said cover having a flange surrounding and embracing the mouth end of the can body, a plurality of cooperating cover fasteners on the body and cover flange, one pair of said cover fasteners on the body and cover consisting of integral nesting loops in the cover flange and mouth portion of the body respectively, said loops being adapted to have a sealing wire passed therethrough to secure said loops, substantially as specified.
FRANK MURPHY.
