W. R. PATTERSON.
LABEL HOLDER ATTACHMENL APPLlcATmN FILED mm1, me..

LABEL-HOLDER ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. (i, 1917.
Application filed March 1, 1916. Serial No. 81,475.
To all rwhom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, TILLLAM R. PATTER- sox, a citizen of the United States, residing.
at Loretto, 'in the county of Marion and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Labelllolder Attachments, of which the following is a speciication.
'lhe invention relates 'to label holders, and more particularly to the class of label holder attachments for mail bags.
T he primary7 obj ect of the invention is the provision of a label holder of this character wherein the same can be conveniently mounted upon a mail bag at any desirable point so that the label bearing the point of destination of the bag can be securely held there in without possibility of the loss of the label during the transit of the bag, and such label can be readily and quickly removed from the holder when the occasion requires.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a label holder of this character which is novel in construction and is readily and easily operated to permit the insertion or removal of the label.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a label holder of this character which is simple in construction, thoroughlyT reliable and efficient in its purpose, strong, durable and inexpensive of manufacture.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part hereinafter set forth.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exempli tied in the construction hereinafter described, and the scope of the application of which will be set forth in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a' fragmentary perspective view of a mail bag showing a label holder constructed in accordance with the invention applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the label holder removed from the bag;
Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the label holder; and
Fig. i is a perspective view of the label holder in open position and the label re moved therefrom.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several ws of the drawings. l
eferring to the drawings in detail, A
designates generally a portion of a Inail bag and B the label holder-,which will be hereinafter fully described. The label holder comprises a base leaf l0 and a swinging top leaf 11, both being formed with pintle sleeves 12, through which is passed a pintle 13 for swingingly connecting the leaves to each other. The pintle sleeves 12 on the base leaf 10 are separated from each other to accommodate therebetween a coiled ten sion spring 14 which is engaged with the base leaf at the top leaf so as to hold the latter normally under tension and in closed position with respect to the base leaf.
The top leaf ll is formed with a central rectangular shaped opening 15, while opposite ends of the said top leaf are extended beyond the base leaf 10 and are upwardly bent to form finger-engaging ears 16 so as to permit the conveneint raising of the top leaf 11 when it is desired to insert a label between the leaves or to remove a label therefrom.
The base leaf is riveted or otherwise secured at any convenient point upon the bag A and at one longer edge of the opening 15 are formed spaced inwardly extending biting spurs 17 which are adapted to bite into a label when superimposed upon the base leaf 10 on the closing of the top leaf so asto positively hold the label between said leaves and prevent the accidental dropping of the label therefrom, the base leaf 10 being formed with suitable holes 18 to accommodate the spurs 17 and prevent any interference of the spurs in the closing of the top leaf upon the base leaf and also to permit the biting of the spurs 17 into the label. Any indicia upon the label held between the leaves 10 and l1 is readily viewable through the opening 15 in the top leaf of the holder.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and manner of use of my in'iproved label holder for mail bags will be readily understood and, therefore, a more extended explanation has been omitted.
Having thus described my` invention, I claim:
A label holder comprising a base leaf having openings therein, certain of said openings being adapted to receive fasteners for the securing of the base leaf upon an article, pintle sleeves cut and bent from one longer edge of the base leaf, a top leaf having outwnrdly bulged portions to provide linger en raging ears at opposite ends and also proved With an open center, pintle sleeves formed on one longer edge of the second named leaf, a pintle trained through the sleeve for swingngly connecting the leaves together, a coiled tension spring carried by the pintle and acting upon the second named leaf to hold the same closed relative to the otllel,I leaf, and spurs fonmed at one edge of 1o the open eentei` of the second named leaf and engagenble in the remaining openings.
In testimony whereof I aix my sgnatinre in presence of two witnesses.
